I am new to reloading and have a question about bullet seating. I know that the overall length of the loaded 30-30 win. round should be under 2.550" but don't know how far the bullet should be in the case.

SASS#23149 June 10, 2008, 01:49 PM I don't see how that could matter as long as you folllow the manuals' oal for that style/type of bullet. rcmodel June 10, 2008, 01:50 PM If you have the proper .308" flat-point bullets for a 30-30, they will most certainly have a cannelure on the bullet. Seat & crimp to the cannelure and you simply can't go wrong. rcmodel The Bushmaster June 10, 2008, 02:14 PM Hip-hip-hooray...rcmodel has it nailed...:D Bartkowski June 11, 2008, 10:01 PM Okay thanks. Thats what I did since that is how I see all factory ammo. Now if the bullet does not have the cannelure how would I know how far to seat the bullet? Does it just have to be less than the overall length? rcmodel June 12, 2008, 12:27 PM If you are shooting these in a lever-action rifle, you have to use flat-point 30-30 bullets for mag tube safety, and they will have a cannelure. If you are shooting them in a Contender pistol or something, there is no overall length requirement to feed through the lever-action, and you can seat them wherever you want too. As a rule of thumb, you should seat to the OAL called for in the load manual. rcmodel
