Check the cut-out at the inside front of the mag-well - if it's a big squarish cut, the upper receiver (at least) is Inch and if it's a semi-circular looking cut, the upper receiver is metric.

The rest of the rifle could be anything as Inch and Metric kits have been mixed together before. Any markings on the rifle ie. serial-numbers, etc? Can you post pics?

It's a L1A1 Sporter Cal 308
Receiver by HEESE US
Assembled by CAI St Alb VT

Thats what is on the reciver, and as far as the cuts on the inner front of the mag well go its like a wide; W

Hesse upper - ok, you got one of the worst ones there, sorry to say - but no biggie if it runs reliably. The W isn't what I was talking about but anyway - those are the feedramps and it sounds like it's what we call the Widow's Peak configuraton, which is good.

CAI - Century Arms Int'l aka the Angry Beavers - another bad sign, but again, as long as it runs reliably, that's all that matters (personally, I'd have the headspace double-checked by a competent 'smith). Century threw together any combination of kits and receivers - metric receivers onto Inch kits, etc so we need to probe a bit more.

What I was referring to earlier is a bit lower down inside the magazine-well itself - the cutout for the magazine lug. Metric mags have a little dimple punched-out in front, Inch mags have a big ol' rectangular steel lug welded to it. I'm not aware of Hesse making Inch receivers, so I'm assuming your mags have the small dimple.

As for the rest of the rifle, what are the markings for the selector - S, R, A? Any serial-number on the lower receiver? The gas-block ears (protecting the front sight) - are they solid (closed-eared) or do they have a big hole through both sides (open-eared)?

Also, describe the rear-sight - does it fold down flat or just slide up and down a ramp (or something else)?

Hey I see it. it's a Metric! thanks AndyC, I know it ain't the best FAL out in the market but for $399 and it came with a scope mount on it, I was willing to take a chance. and so far so good I can hit a target at about 500 yards away with a scope off of my hunting rifle that is on there temporary. I was thinking of putting on a better stock on it, a scope, and maybe a bi-pod. :)

Or shorten the barrel, new stock, and a red dot scope. I keep going back and fourth on wich way to go.

Doesn't need to be the best as long as it works reliably - and sounds like the price was good, too ;)

My Hesse ran just fine. Many don't, but the only way to know is to go out to the range. They are low-valued, but if yours works, that will be all that matters.
