What "Unique" factory guns do you own??
Shooter973
June 10, 2008, 06:51 PM
Not looking for replies about custom guns, just the kind of unusual guns that not everybody else has one of?
I own a Ruger Redhawk in 357, 5.5 inch barrel and have not seen another in my area in years.
I also own a Ruger SP101, in 22 LR, with the 2 inch barrel. Haven't seen another one of these around anywhere.
I also own a S&W Model 1955 Taget Model in 45 acp, takes moon clips. I see a few of the new Stainless types but no other Blued ones like mine.
These are just some of my "Unususal" handguns that I don't see around much, what do you have theats NOT COMMON but not custom made?

Sorry but did you mean Handguns only? You were not specific in the title.

A blued Ruger Redhawk!
What makes it unique is I have a letter from Ruger stating they don't make the Redhawk in blue steel and are not going too!
(When the Redhawk came out I wrote to Ruger asking for a blued steel model. They replied back with the above letter.)

PS: ACERA, I have a Daisy single shot bolt action but it's chambered in plain old boring .22 long rifle. It's pretty cool with an adjustable length butt and the barrel/foregrip comes off for easy packing after unscrewing a collar on the barrel.

I don't know if these qualify, but this is as close as I can get to rare or unique.
In 1917 S&W had about 600 left over .455 caliber 1st Models that were declined by the British in favor of the lighter and simpler 2nd Models. These were converted to .45 Colt for the American market and dumped on a big dealer in St. Louis.
http://www.fototime.com/36BA2D9898784AC/standard.jpg
The 38/44 "Heavy Duty" was popular with police in the 1930s. The standard barrel length was 5" and supposedly only about 80 were made before the war with a 4" barrel. After the war, the 4" length became standard, but among pre-war guns, collectors tell me that only around 80 were made. This is one of them. Unfortunately, it's been nickel plated and the tip of the hammer spur (on the unusual "humpback" hammer) is broken off.
http://www.fototime.com/8AF8E798B74E3F3/standard.jpg
In 1938 the Utah Highway Patrol ordered 50 of the then new .357 Magnum S&W revolvers (now called the Registered Magnum by collectors). They were factory inscribed with the agency name and numbered 1 - 50. This is #27.

HK 4, by Heckler & Koch.
It's an alloy frame with four interchangeable barrels & mags, to fire .22 RF, .25 ACP, .32 ACP & .380 ACP. Each barrel has its own (captive) recoil spring.
It's a small & light pistol; the .380 is a bit unpleasant to shoot, because of recoil. :(

Those are commonplace at my club. But we're heavily bullseye oriented with an annual D/A revolver league. I've got one. It's probably my most accurate revolver. I shoot it better than my Model 14. The greater weight gives it greater inertia and a slower arc of movement.

Nothing really rare or even close to it. Sometimes "factory limited" just means "we didn't get enough orders".
Anyhow:
STI Texican - low production much to STI's chagrin - if they ever get their CT supplier producing it won't be "rare" any more.
Wild West Guide Gun - 'cuz even though many have heard of them, they just don't make many as a manufacturer. But, there they are in ATF's 2006 report as having produced 102 rifles. I paid an excise tax so it must be so.
Doug Turnbull Classic - an excellent example of "rare due to limited market". Any Freedom Arms would fall under this kind of "rare".
John Wayne New Vaquero - not so limited as it doesn't get shot. I think Talo "limits" these types to the number they can sell but could be wrong.

I used to have a Daewo DP-51 Triple Action (http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg47-e.htm). Interesting pistol. Trigger is of “triple action” type. This means that other than traditional double or single action fire modes it has “fast action” mode, apparently borrowed from FN’s GP “Fast Action” pistol. In this mode hammer is cocked by the cycle of the slide, then it is pushed forward by the pressure on the hammer head. In this position, the main spring remains cocked, so only light pressure on the trigger is necessary to recock the hammer and fire the gun in the “double action manner”. Or, alternatively, hammer can be recocked manually to be fired in single action for maximum first-shot accuracy.

A few years ago, I picked up a Western Field No 5 pistol in .22lr at a gun show for the princely sum of $150 (it came with the original box, magazine, holster and a "proof" target dated Apr 1954). I can barely remember Montgomery Ward catalogs, let alone one with firearms listed. On doing some research (and reading this thread), I found that this was produced in the Unique factory in the Pyrenees as the Corsair/Model D. The finish is in the 95+% range, and I have field-stripped and cleaned it (had a LOT of sludge to remove internally). I consider it one of the "rarer jewels" in my collection.

Introduced in 1954, the Unique Model D is a modification of the earlier Unique Model 52. The basic differences between the various D models are barrel lengths and grips. The Unique Model D6 with 6" barrel and thumbrest grips was marketed in the USA under the name "Corsair".
It was sold through various outlets here; with the factory markings & "Corsair" on the slide, with J.C. Higgins (Sears) markings as the "Model 85", and Montgomery Wards as the "Model 5". J.C. Higgens even offered a 15-round magazine option.
Numrich lists both 10 round and 15 round magazines currently (albeit pricey) under JC Higgins 85.

I have never seen another S&W 629 CL DX with 8 3/8" barrel.
Educate me...what is pinned and recessed?

Below is an H&R 676 double action convertible with a 12' barrel & 2 cylinders for .22LR and .22WMR. Not unique but not common, either. It shoots like a rifle, pretty much.

Not unique, either, but interesting, nonetheless, a very early Whitney Wolverine made before they got sued and had to remove the word "Wolverine" from the gun.
Cpirtle: I love your plated Whitney. I'll trade!

Educate me...what is pinned and recessed?
The chambers are counter-bored and the barrel is retained with a cross-pin.

I think pictures work much better tha words for this. The blue Model 57 is pinned (cross pin in frame just ahead of cylinder gap) and recessed (cylinder chambers counter bored so the rim of the bullet sets flush into the cylinder). The nickle Model 57 isn't pinned or recessed.

Thanks W. Yurt for the offer but I think I'll hang onto mine.
Oddly eough I saw an original blued Wolverine this weekend at the Medina (OH) show. It was in maybe 80% condition and the guy was asking $500. I actually thought about it for a second..

Colt Peacekeeper with a 6 inch barrel. Only made for a couple of years. Bought it new and I've carried it for about 22 years now...

FN "Browning 1900" .32 auto. Found it in a pawn shop one day, think I paid somewhere around $100 for it. Don't think I've ever seen another.

Kinda' unique is this S-M Sporter from 1953. It's a .22rf single-shot that was only offered for that one year. Named for Sydney Manson, Pres. of the company, and it was co-designed by W.H.B. Smith, a well-known gun-guru of that era, along with others.
At most, only 600 were produced, according to various accounts. Even Manson admitted in a later interview that the gun had immediate flaws come to light and its sale was discontinued. Replacement parts were not available so if it quit working the majority were trashed.
This one is in excellent condition. Appears to even be unfired. At bottom is a copy of an advertisement for it in The American Rifleman.

S&W 629 8-3/8" pinned and recessed- only supposedly 200 made
Actually the 8 3/8" 629 "no-dash" was in production for one year only, making it the rarest of the P&R'd 629s, but a lot more than 200 were made.

A wartime commercial (1915) broomhandle C96. It gets a lot of looks at the range. A M19 and M27 with 5 inch barrels, don't see many of those.

I collect single-shot .22rf guns. Below are an old S&W Model of 91 and a Colt Camp Perry. Both guns were built on revolver frames. Note the Smith still retains the revolver recoil shields.
Have factory letters on both. Colt was shipped 1934 to a Fort Worth dealer. The Smith was shipped 1901 to a Philadelphia dealer. There were 2,525 Camp Perrys made between 1920 and 1941. According to Supica's S&W book there were only 862 of the Model of 91 made. Letter says they were made between 1893 and 1905.
They may not be really "unique," but they're certainly scarce. Nice collectible investments.
