Can anyone recommend a .54 caliber muzzleloader I intend to use it for deer hunting and at the range. I have a older traditions but would like to replace it and want to keep the same caliber because of all the other accessories and ammo I have.

Lyman's Great Plains series is usually well spoken of for the price. That's what I intend to get.

Plus there's the Lyman Trade Rifle & Deerstalker:
The Trade rifle has a 28 inch barrel and a single trigger.
The Deer Stalker has a 24 inch barrel which is interchangable, including stainless.

I like the Lymans myself. I plan to buy a Great Plains Rifle (probably a kit) one of these days. I want to hunt with PRBs but if you prefer conicals the Great Plains Hunter has the faster twist barrel.

I`ve got a Cabelas sporterized 54 cal Hawken rifle ...it`s a great shooter with round balls and buffalo bullets ..They are made by Invest Arms Italy ...Thompson parts will interchange on it too ...

FWIW, Investarms makes the Lyman GPR and TR. The "Hawkens" sold by Cabela's and Dixie Gun Works are basically the same gun as the Lyman TR, with the addition of a cap box.
As an aside, the DGW and Cabela's rifles are available in LH persuasion for us southpaws, while the Lyman TR is RH-only. The GPR is available in LH format.
If you're planning to shoot roundballs the GPR is the better choice, because it has a 1:60 twist. The TR and the Cabela's and DGW Hawkens have 1:48 twists, which are OK for balls but may shoot conicals better.

I've been out of the blackpowder game for a number of years.
To get right to the rat killin', is there a decent production flint or percussion Pennsylvania style rifle made anymore, or have they been relagated to custom rifle status??

I know that traditions always seems to get bad reviews, but I purchased the .54 traditions Hawken Woodsmen and have been VERY happy with it. Once I got the barrel broke in (120-200 rounds) it has been very accurate out to the 150 yards I have tested it. I shoot PRB exclusively.

There's also at least one 1803 Harper's Ferry, or the 1841 "Mississippi" rifle, available, I believe Dixie Gunworks has them.

You can buy a used .54 TC Hawken on Gun Broker then add a .58 caliber GM barrel for the cost of a new one.

The Pedersoli Jaeger comes in .54 in percussion or flint. It is a very nicely made rifle that is also rifled for modern conicals. Dixie occaisionally runs a sale on them.
The Doc is out now.
