Found this on camera forum warning Alaskan hikers to carry MINIMUM .44mag and NOT to aim at head.

What's the background on this photo? I'm wondering because that doesn't look like a classic bear mauling, let alone predation. The guts are untouched, and arms and hands seem fairly undamaged. Bears usually hit the head, face, and tear up the hands and forearms because that's what's in the way. They will also slash up the chest and often open up the gutsack with a slash. If a bear is feeding, it will typically rip up the guts to get at the organ meat first, as well as breaking open the skull. The terrible damage to one part of the leg in this picture and the intact gut sack and chest is quite odd, and makes me question what sort of bear attack this was--or if indeed it was a bear attack. I have heard of black bears latching on to the leg of someone like a big mastiff, but never of a bear carefully removing all the skin and meat on one section of a leg.

Anyway, please provide more background if you know of any.

I don't remember where I saw this picture before, but I have. The caption I saw of it the last time was that this was the work of a pack of dogs or wolves or something. The only thing I'm sure of is that I'm glad I wasn't him.
