hi All. I use hoppes#9 to clean my shotguns. I know its good to take out the lead in a shot gun but i was wondering what to us eto remove the Plastic wad left by the fired shells. Does the Hoppes#9 nitro powder solvent clean the plastic wad off as well or do i need another solvent for that?

Kroil. Spray, wait 2 hours. Wipe out. You may not need to wait 2 hours, I just do.

I use Break-Free. I found out you do a lot better by spraying the barrel and letting it sit overnight or at least a couple of hours. Then the plastic has turned loose and curled up.

I use Shooter's Choice MC#7 Bore Cleaner, but a lot of the bore solvents in glass jars state on the label that they'll remove plastic. Wrap a patch around a brush and have at it. Sometimes the only MC#7 I have on the bench has been mixed with Kroil and that works too.

Acetone will knock it out in a hurry, but I'm not crazy about working with acetone and I have a half gallon left from a refinishing project.

Almost forgot, Hoppe's Bench Rest-9 Copper Solvent works in a hurry on plastic, but it stinks. "Nothing cleans away copper fouling better or faster. Instead of the usual 3-4 days, it can clean copper fouling overnight. Also excellent for removing powder, lead and plastic deposits."

When I bought the Break Free Powder Blast it just melted the plastic away, no problem.

As a plus, it smells like orange soda, hahah.

Scothbrite pad, the finest grit.

Leave screw in chokes in gun!!

-Wisps of Scotchbrite on the brush, which is on the cleaning rod, which is chucked into drill.

-Excellent way to clean chambers.

-Run that puppy from chamber to muzzle and this is the fastest and easiest way to clean a shotgun barrel.

-Take another rod with a cotton mop, some old T shirt cloth, some oil, and run 'er back through.


Done.

Or, a worn out brush wrapped with a patch and some #0000 steel wool....pick your solvent.....Hoppes and CLP is what I use....

The ones I get are green, and I cannot say for sure if these are the same as the white ones are not.


I used to recommend 0000 ( 4 aught) steel wool.
The problem came to be, folks were not removing all the "steel" wool and getting rust.
They were not removing the wisps of steel wool from the brush used and they were using various "concoctions" to clean a gun with.


We were cleaning chambers this way, and the rest of the bore, this way, before cordless drills, tube sets, concoctions to clean and lube with and plastic wads became the norm.

Total agreement...be sure to get all steel wool particles out of the bore....I use Hoppes with the wool/patch/brush, then wipe out the bore with patch/CLP....any solvent plus any oil plus your effort will remove wad residue and protect the bore....

Hey, if I use a brace and bit, I can stop worrying about running the drill too fast and letting too much heat build up in the chamber. {Great Scott! That just might work. My electric drill is closer, though. ;) }

If you go cordless/battery/electric, just consider what that'll do to your feeling of self-worth....do it the old fashioned way by having someone else clean it for you.....

J&B Non-embedding Bore Cleaner. Best there is; best there ever was; best there likely ever will be. It removes plastic, carbon, and lead or copper fouling.
