Bears...if all else fails

I would not go looking for a bear to test this but it is based on bear anatomy and motion. If you look at a bears skull, you will see that his brain pan is narrow and lies behind his eyes and is only as wide as the distance between the eyes (small target!). Furthermore, when a bear runs its head moves in a small vertical arc 6-10 inches long and the head is completely stopped at the top and bottom of the arc. Soooo...if you aim
at the center of the arc you may hit the top of the head or spinewhen the bears head is low or in the chest when the bears head is high.
And for a firearm---a 1911 with a Wison 10-rd mag loaded w/ Winchester 185gr. jacketed truncated cone. And for my next trick......

IF....
You never go into bear country alone.
Encounter testy bear, shoot buddy in foot.
Then run.
You can't outrun a bear.
You only have to outrun your buddy.

Hope your "buddy" is not highly motivated, and possessed with a Buck 110.
Some weapons are inherently better, but the user makes all the difference.

We really need a bear forum.
I don't know much about shooting bears as we were man enough and smart enough to kill them long ago, but shouldn't you use a rifle to kill a bear. Why is everyone out there so obessed with shooting bears with pistols? The thin air? The heat? What?

Why is everyone out there so obessed with shooting bears with pistols?

OUTDOOR LIFE just had a summary of 500 bear attacks which took place in the 1900's. Put together by some government agency.
Results:
Hike in groups.
Make lots of noise.
Carry a weapon.
Don't run ... don't even back up!
Don't climb into the sack smelling of B-B-Q sauce.

Is the lesson to shoot for COM, not head? Real men carry slingshots and knives only in grizzly country.

The reason for the pistol limitation is firearms are illegal in national parks and a pistol can be concealed; perhaps in a video camera case. I would, of course, prefer a 10ga semiauto! Anti-handgun=pro-rape.

Game and Fish just shot a black bear on the other side of the mountain in a hoity-toity golf subdivision. Seems everyone liked to feed it, and it took to eating pets. Someone called and complained it was in the birdfeeder. Fishcops showed up and shot it with a 12-ga. (Which turned out to do the trick just fine.)
Big article today on the dozens of nasty emails fishcops are getting over this. Bear was cute.

"if all else fails," move it to the Hunt forum. :D
It may not last long there, either...
