One man's experience.

Focus. Sight Picture. Breathe out…slow…easy…

“Shooter ready!”

I shift my grip slightly on my Yugoslavian SKS, filled with last-minute doubts. Is the gas switch in the right position? Is my firing pin channel really clean? Am I using the wrong grip out of inexperience? Did Tito plan on using these out to two hundred yards? Too late. Let’s do this.

“Let’s get ‘er done.”

“Go on the beep!”

Two hundred yards away, 8 black steel plates taunt me. Heat shimmers off of the dry Carolina field, warping my targets. I get down on the rifle, setting the foregrip on the sandbag and lining up the first plate.

A beep pierces through my earplugs. One man. One rifle. One minute. It’s showtime.

Pop. “High!”

Pop. “High!”

Pop. “High! Pull it down!”

The heat is causing the bullet to stay up. Bring it down a little. I pull a fine bead with my front sight.

Pop. “Hit!”

I’m shocked. I actually hit it! Next target.

Pop. Pop. “Hit!”

Pop. Pop. Pop. I fire steadily and two more targets fall.

I start to take up the slack again on the trigger but it doesn’t engage. I let off and reach for a stripper clip lying on my blanket.

Slam-and-jam, pull back, ride home. Ten more rounds are ready to go. Alright Tito. Let’s see what your rifle can do.

Ten more shots, three more targets down. One left. I reach for another stripper clip. Unlike my others, it’s a parkerized Yugoslavian. I run one end into the guiding rails of the bolt carrier. Seven rounds come off, but the rest bind on the metal and stick.

Curse you, lousy Yugoslavian stripper clips.

I yank the stripper clip and the remaining three rounds from the weapon. How long do I have left? I pull back the bolt and let it ride home.

Pop. Pop. Beeeeep. Dust obscures the berm. Did I get the last one?

The dust clears. No joy.

I assume that was the match today? I didn't make it..but sounded like a lot of fun. I need to get out there and sight in my SKS at 200 and give it a shot.

Yep that was it. I think with some practice I could clear all the targets but the accuracy is so poor the odds of placing are next to nil. Still fun though!

I didn't know that any service rifle competitions were held with eastern-bloc weapons...

Nice tale, Cmdr. Gravez0r. My second most formal fun in shooting was 1000 yard matches with the Garand. (First was metallic silhouettes with handguns.)

I wouldn't mind seeing a milsurp match around here sometime.

My strong suspicion is that my Yugo SKS shoots more accurately with the gas shut off, but I haven't been able to fire it all that much to prove it.

I have no interest in placing....just be fun with an SKS.

There is a loose group of shooters here in Texas that meet 4-6 times a year to eat BBQ, gossip, BS each other, and shoot a Mil-Surp match. They call it a "Bang N Clang "match. 10" steel plates at 200yds, offhand, one required reload from body. As issue rifles only, no Nat Match or custom builts allowed. A timed match with 10 targets. Fastest time WINS!!!!!!!!
There are different classes of match, semi-auto, bolt gun, single shot, and muzzleloader. Shoots take 1-2 days. There are 100targets so 10 shooters get to shoot before a time out is called and everybody walks out to reset plates. A LOT of fun! The kids have a "Rubber Ducky" match. Single shot 22 at 35yds. Rubber ducks sitting on a 4x4. Another timed event.
Most of the time the matches are held between Sept. and May, cooler that way.:D

This was a "battle rifle" competition. Any weapon designed for combat is eligible for entry. The next one is at the Charlotte Rifle and Pistol Club on September 6th.

I was one of four contestants (out of 35 or so) that ran combloc weps. The only Russian gun that did better than me was a AK-74 in .223--this particular rifle is known as the "MOA AK" and it was truly a sight to behold.

I like it! Brings back memories of the first 3-gun competition I shot. I used my Yugo SKS and had a blast. I was actually surprised how well it did on the torso targets at 200yds, but I just couldn't quite get the 10" plate.
