I just went and shipped a revolver to Arizona, from Ohio, via UPS. Package weighed 4.55 pounds, value $450. It cost $81.05. Please tell me I did something wrong. And I mean besides not driving 90 miles to use FedEx. Have the costs gone up that much since the last time I shipped one?

did you ship it Next Day Air?
edit:
a quick calculation shows a 5lb package @$72.10 plus insurance, so I would say your costs are spot on.

Rifles can be shipped USPS for about 30 bucks.

Next time ship through your FFL. They might charge $20 or so for the paperwork (they have to log it in and out of their bound book) but they can ship handguns using USPS. I've done this and most handguns will fit in the larger flat rate box for $13; insurance is usually $5 or so. Way cheaper than UPS or FedEx.

I had just about reached the same conclusion Freak. Man, I know it's been awhile, but last time I shipped a handgun it was $29. They must use gas in shipping !

Yes, this is part of the conspirisy to make it so you have to go thru an FFL!

Shipping through an FFL is usually cheaper than contract carrier.

I have sold 12 or 15 firearms out of state and always use my FFL to ship them USPS. Much cheaper and we have never had a problem.

Shipping costs for EVERYTHING have gone way up. I've shipped some items lately that used to ship for about six bucks, and the current cost is twelve. Handguns need to go Next Day Air/Overnight Express/whatever they call "first thing in the morning" delivery, and the price on that is expensive no matter what you do.

It's also significantly less expensive to ship between two commercial establishments vs. express shipping to a residential location. Not that that helps you much... I can sympathize. It's tough to bargain-shop online with shipping costs that steep!

I ship UPS and it should not cost you more than $20 unless you shipped it next day air.

UPS and FEDEX require that handguns are shipped next day air. Doing otherwise would expose your self to no insurance coverage. I think the best way is to have a FFL holder run it through his/her books and ship USPS in flat rate box with insurance

Sigh...the cheapest FFL around me charges $44 + shipping costs, so its usually no better than UPS or FedEx's exorbitant rates.

$48.50 via UPS NDA for a C&R handgun I ordered last week. Would have been about $10 cheaper to pay a local dealer the $25 to use their FFL and have USPS shipping.
