Shottie question - help the ignorant please

How long does a shotgun barrel have to be before I would have to purchase the stamp for short barrel? (If I'm asking that correctly).

I am looking for a shorter barrel pump shottie with a full stock. (I have no desire for a pistol grip, gadgets, doodads, etc.). I would like to keep this simple and practical. I was wanting something (if available) that would basically be the pump version of a coach gun.

I don't know enough about the shotgun world to know where to look or ask, so I figured this would be the place to start. I found this pic on a different forum, but the original poster is no longer active, so I can't ask him about it. But this is something along the lines of what I am looking for.

Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Thumper, I believe that 18" is the breaking point. I would recommend 18 1/2 inches just so that you would have a little leeway for a short tape measure.

18" barrel + 26" overall length.

18"

Though, to be pedantic about it, the stamp goes along with the shotgun, not the barrel.

Wow, thank you, all. Much appreciated. Now, the above model in the pic looks like it would fit the bill. Any suggestions on where/who to obtain one from or a recommended alternative model?

Again, any suggestions/recommendations greatly appreciated.

Actually, the gun in the photo would not fit the bill.
It appears to be about a 14" barrel from the picture.

Remington, Mossberg, and others make all kinds of shotguns with legal 18" barrels.

Yeah, the one in the pic above is definitely an NFA weapon.

Also note that you measure the length of the barrel by inserting a dowel down the barrel until it contacts the closed breech face, marking the dowel and measuring. Not measuring the outside of the barrel from receiver to end of barrel. FYI

Oops, my bad. (Thank you much for the corrections).

Thanks for the links to models that WILL fit the bill.

I recently purchased a Mossberg (54169 is the stock #, I think) combo, comes with a 28" barrel, and an 18 1/2 inch barrel, pistol grip kit, but has the full stock installed. $300.00.

As others have pointed out, the barrel on the 870 in the pick appears to be about 14".

I have a limited selection of pump shotguns(all wingmasters), but if you're close I'd be happy to let you shoot one. What area of TX are you in?

Anything under 18" on a shotgun will require a $200 tax stamp from ATF(unless it never had a buttstock, in which case it would be a $5 tax stamp).

That is a mighty fine offer, and I thank you. I live in Amarillo (up in the Panhandle). Seems to be a remote area of Texas as I have difficulty finding many people from there.

As inexpensive as good shotguns seem to be, I'm not opposed to the tax stamp.

Save yourself $$$, hassles (IT'S A SAWED OFF SHOTGUN, IT'S ILLEGAL!), decibels (SBSs are LOUD), etc and stay with a barrel slightly over 18" like the one pictured at the link below.

And PLEASE call it a shotgun...

Personally, at some point, I plan on taking an 18" barrel shotgun, probably an 870 or 500, and installing an M4-style sliding stock and pg. That way, I still get a stock, plus about as compact a firearm as possible for transport and storage.
