Purchased the 642 on Friday. Good close in BUG. Tried it today and have several questions:

1) Anyone lightened the trigger via a different spring package. Any ignition problems.

2) Any way to use abrasive material the aluminum frame without scratching? Spcifically the by the topstrap at the cylinder gap.

Thanks

Mark

I am not a gunsmith, but I have been told that a J-frame is the hardest to do a good action job to. It' requires a true professional to get it right.

Ask around the Smith & Wesson forum (http://www.smith-wessonforum.com). They can recommend a good smith.

I have been carrying a 642 for 8 years almost as my bug. You can do a trigger job on j frames, just a little harder. I stay with factory springs. For the pull as it is now-just put about 500 rounds through it and it will ease up.

The good folks at http://www.gunsprings.com/1ndex.html make replacement springs that'll work just fine and slick up your trigger. I'd put a few hundred rounds through the gun before staking my life on it; then again, I'd do likewise with any gun.

Try getting some Wolff springs. From what I found out, the stock hammer spring is 10 lbs. You can get a "shooter pack" from Wolff with 9, 8.5 and 8# all packaged together. All you need is a Brownells spring remover or maybe a trip to the local smithy. Given the primary mission of the 642 (and I would imagine that you didn't buy yours for target practice) I would stay on the heavier side to ensure that the gun fires when needed. I put an 8.5 in mine.

Hello. I've had good luck with a Galco pocket holster. You might also check with Mr. Eric Larsen. I think he posts here as well.

Best.

I recommend a Mika pocket holster. Robert Mika's business is in Wisconsin. He's a retired police officer and knows what works. I live in Indiana, and holster shipped was only $14.95. It covers the hammer and trigger of my Charter Arms Undercover. It stays in pocket when you draw gun. To show you what kind of guy he is... He sent me holster to try, before I paid him. Said if I didn't like it then give it to someone who will and I don't owe him anything.

I have a line of pocket holsters for various guns, including the S&W j-frame. See www.kdholsters.com.

I carry my 442 in my Pocket Defender (without the anti-print panel -- I don't feel I need it) all the time -- carries very nice.
