A 19-year-old man accidentally shot and killed himself Tuesday morning while he was attempting to rob a Grand Prairie home, authorities said.
Cameron Sands, 19, of Fort Worth kicked in the door of the house and then shot himself in the stomach as he pulled a gun out of his pants to shoot the homeowner, Grand Prairie police said. The homeowner was not injured.
After Mr. Sands shot himself, he dropped the gun and ran out of the home. Police found his body around 5:30 a.m. in the driveway of the home in the 2800 block Garden Grove Road, said Lt. John Brimmer, a Grand Prairie police spokesman.
“This is the first that I’ve heard of a robbery suspect killing himself as he is drawing a gun out of his waist band,” Lt. Brimmer said. “The criminal evidence points to that. It certainly isn’t common.”
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has ruled the death an accident.

Accident? Sounds like justifiable homicide to me.
Defense of a third person. The guy was a hero, he shot a burglar :)

No kidding. I can't imagine how confused I would be if I saw that happen. And i'd probably laugh quite a bit after the adrenaline wore off.

I can just picture the event. He kicks in the door, puts his hand on his gun, shouts.........
I AM THE ONLY ONE HERE QUALIFIED TO HAVE A GUN!
And the rest as they say is history!

I can honestly say that if that happened to me I wouldn't be physically capable of calling 9-1-1. I would be on the floor locked in a fetal position due to hysterics.

God is on the side of the homeowner.
Just based on the article above, the robber was really intent on killing his victim first, then robbing the house. The homeowner probably did something way beyond the call of duty in terms of kindness sometime in his life, therefore, God protected him during that morning.

A clear cut case of justifiable suicide. Of course it still would not surprise me if the home owner doesn't get sued by the RDDBG's* family.

I'd hire one of those litigation happy lawyers that like to sue homeowners for shooting criminals and sue his family for messin' up my door.

In NYC (or similar), I sadly wonder if the cops would have arrested the homeowner before investigating.

Maybe we can also get Glocks programmed to KB every time a BG tries to fire one. Instant gun karma.

A righteous shoot! lol!
If the homeowner and BG didn't know each other I can't imagine how the BG's family could sue but I have no doubt there are bottom-feeding scum out there that would try. Pretty sad!
I'm imagining the BG approaching the Pearly Gates... "Son, you're not supposed to be here yet. What happened?" "Well, I, uh, see, I, uh ..." Priceless! Course, a low-life like that probably got a pitchfork in the back before he got that far. Figuratively speaking at all, of course... :-)

Is this a justifiable homicide because it stopped a serious crime in progress or is it a murder because a death was caused in the commision of a felony?

We need more criminals like this one, perhaps they should teach more "Mexican Carry" in prison.

I shouldn't but I have to ask. Did he really shoot himself in the stomach or shoot his dinghy off?

June 19, 2008, 03:47 PM
I'd imagine, Grizzly, that he did indeed shoot himself in the gut if he ended up bleeding out. Then again, if you were to shoot Captain Winky while in the process of breaking and entering, would you go to the hospital and admit it, or would you rather die painfully.

FieroCDSP, that would be a hard choice. The incident and the comments were so funny I just had to ask.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has ruled the death an accident.
I'm surprised that nobody here has yet argued that it's a negligent discharge.

I bet the homeowner just stood there after the event and continued eating his lunch, exhumed a muffled "huh", and called 911 after finishing the meal.
at least that's what I would do.
I would really be more confused than anything.
