Polish Tantal AK-74 from J & G--any good?

Has anyone got any experience with this specific rifle:

http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/rifles/ak-47-and-rpk-rifles/p/polish-tantal-ak-74-cai-rifle%2C-5-45x39-caliber/cPath/209_214/products_id/1648

I'd appreciate any feedback on it before I start lobbying my wife to OK me to buy one.

Is the barrel chrome lined, does it use the same mags as the Romanian varriants, does it work reliably, etc.

For my purposes, it would be used as a close quarter defensive gun; reliability is my number one concern.

Thanks in advance,

Mike B.

All available 5.45x39 mags are interchangeable.

It is a Century build.

For CQ, I'd recommend a 12ga. The bullets from the Tantal will leave your home, if they don't hit something harder than they are first.

Been hearing some bad things about the Century Tantal builds. I'd pass.

It has a USA made barrel which is not chrome lined. There are some other tantal builds w/ the original barrel.

I have not seen one of these rifles, but have read a few reports of the bullets keyholing, due to an incorrect diameter of barrel.

The ones with the non-chromed USA made barrels are the ones to avoid. Apparently Green Mountain (the company that makes USA made AK barrels) used a 5.56x45 barrel as their basis for the 5.45x39 barrel and the Tantal barrels are a hodge-podge of the two.

Not indoors; I meant 100-200 yds max. We use a .38 spl in the house as a primary.

What I'm actually looking for is a hi-cap AK-74 varriant (chrome barrel desired) that is actually available now and <500 bucks. I've been monkeying with a pal's WASR-2 and want to buy one to eat that cheap corrosive ammo. Anyone know of a source for such an animal?

WASR-2 rifles are available almost everywhere. Ask your local gun shop or call Century

http://www.centuryarms.biz is the place to shop. Just have your local FFL holder send them a copy of his license and have fun.

nalioth; CAI has been out-of-stock for a couple of months. The OTHER 'WASR' calibers are available but I'm having a time finding another WASR-2.

everywhere is out of WASR-2's including century and all of their main web based distributors.

All i can say is Gunbroker if you want it bad enough.

I bought a century tantal on an impulse, got a good deal on it from a local shop.

Got it home and saw a bunch bad press in online groups. Did the bullet in muzzle test and it swallowed the 5.45 all the way to the case. Then I went and did the bullet test on a couple other 5.45, a sar2 and a friends bulgarian...and yea, that century tantal USA brl is oversize.

I guess the question that begs is

Will there be any more WASR-2's?

You could look for a used SAR in 5.45x39 (SAR 2 or 3, I can't remember). Should be in your budget, and perhaps better than a WASR.

You could look for a used SAR in 5.45x39 (SAR 2 or 3, I can't remember).
SAR-1 7.62x39
SAR-2 5.45x39
SAR-3 5.45x45 ( .223 Remington )

The same numbering applies to the WASR line.

Is it true that Romania decided to seriously reduce their AK-47 exports in order to comply with some sort of a requirement to join NATO?

Is it true that Romania decided to seriously reduce their AK-47 exports in order to comply with some sort of a requirement to join NATO? Not at all. I do wish that Classic would have checked their info before posting that FUD.

Romania has been a member of NATO for longer than it's been a member of the EU ( a NATO member since 2004, to be exact, and EU member since the first of 2007 ).

I have that exact rifle. For close range, it is decent and reliable.

I have one and have not had any problems. I pulled a bullet and did
the muzzle test and it passed.
Most others were using wolf ammo that had problems. I am using Bulgaria and Polish ammo. The
thickest portion sits below the case neck.

An SAR-2 might be harder to find than you think. :scrutiny:

What I'm actually looking for is a hi-cap AK-74 varriant (chrome barrel desired) that is actually available now and <500 bucks.

For what its worth I still say Ohio Rapid Fire is the best kept secret:

If you get an AK-74 clone from ORF, you will not be disappointed. :)

(this is before I refinished the wood)
