I have acquired a Zastava Mini – Mauser (Interarms Mini Mk X) action recently with which I am planning to build a starting centerfire rifle for my eight year old son.

We chose the 6 x 45mm (6mm - .223) as most of his hunting will be done on game in the Impala (read Deer) weight class.

I am looking for any recommendations on barrel length as well as rate of twist. Originally the twist rate used for this calibre was 1:12 for the 75gr bullets, we will be using bullets up to 105gr some reports indicate that a 1:12 rate does not stabilise the heavier bullets. A few of my hunting friends recommend a rate of 1:9. I am aiming for a barrel length of 20” no more. Can I get away with 18”?

Any further recommendations or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Regards
Jacques

I think I would contact a barrel manufacturer like Shilen and ask the twist question. My gut feel is that 105 grain bullets would be a problem for the 6x45 because of seating depth. The action that you have will make up into a fine, lightweight sporter. I agree that 20 inches is enough barrel for your purposes. Military .223's have used 18 inch barrels successfully. I would think that you could use a #1 contour, 18 inch barrel without detriment, but blast will be increased. Get the boy some hearing protection.
