Pre-64 Action Win M70

I have two of these rifles, one in .338 Win Mag, the other is a .270 Win. For some time I've noticed the .270 will only take rounds from the magazine- if I place the round directly into the chamber the bolt will not close as the claw extractor doesn't slip over the case rim. The .338 Win Mag however, will accept either methods of loading.
Has anyone else ran into this problem, and how do I fix it?
Thanks for your replies.

If you look at the face of the extractor on the .270, what does it look like?
Is it straight across, or is it beveled at an angle toward the firing pin?
If it's not beveled, it's not going to cam over the cartridge rim. If the bevel isn't at the correct angle it will also fail to close on a round dropped into the chamber.

It is beveled as you described...odd that it used to work fine, and now doesn't.

Hum....
Only thing I can figure is that maybe for some reason the extractor is jammed on the collar, or otherwise simply not moving freely.
