I may have hit the mother load for some wheel weights.

After calling around many places and being told that they don't sell there weights or the have somebody that already gets them I found a place that has a almost full 50 gallon drum full.

This guy owns a salvage yard for cars and trucks. He said you know lead is pretty high right now and is sold by the pound.

I mentioned to him that I recently talked to the scrap yard and they are only paying 25 cents a pound right now,

He told me to call him back Monday so he could see what he could get for them.

so what do you think would be a price to agree on per pound

I would say it would depend on your area. Around here the scrap yard gives 12 to 15 cents per pound. I can buy a five gallon bucket full for $20. I thought I would throw this in to make you cry a little, it tears me up. It's not mine,it belongs to somebody on another forum I go on.

I pay $0.40 a lb, which is the same the scrapyard pays. To secure this rate, I found a mom'n'pop that takes their lead in... so I save them the work and mileage.

If you are hunting a lead mine, avoid the big name shops with the contracts, and find the small shop without the supply chain.

And if you get lead at a quarter a lb, you are way smarter than I am. :D

Be aware that a lot of the wheel weights they are using these days are zinc.

I've been watching for zinc weights, but haven't actually found any. I think it might be a regional thing.

Lead was down to around .80 cents a pound for new clean alloy a week or so ago . . I don't know what it is now. I wouldn't pay more than .20 per pound for wheel weights. If I remember right a full 55 gallon drum is close to 1250lbs . . . . .so I'd say $250 would be a pretty fair price . .I'd probably offer $200. (Hope you've got something that'll lift it. :) )

Just for grins, I bounced around to several of the auction sites and wheel weights are going for about .90 per pound, pure lead around 1.00 and linotype a little above a 1.00. I pay WAY less than that, but that seems to be retail right now.

Well finally got the wheel weights. HE was way off on the amount that he had.
200 pounds is all he had at 45 cents a pound

He did say that if I wanted to go and take them off the scrap cars my self he would only charge me 30 cents a pound

IMO $0.45 is too high because wheel weights aren't pure lead and the clips which are steel weigh a lot too. I don't remember what the clips weigh but they could be as much as 20% of the weight of a 5 gallon bucket.

If you can get him down to $0.35 a lb ($70 for the whole 200 lbs.) I would make the deal. I think $90 is just a bit much but then again, I can be and usually am wrong!! LOL

Do a scrap metals search on Google for current prices.

Used wheel weights here are free of charge. If you take away, they say "thanks". ;)
