i'm comparing 22lr semi rifles. so far have looked at marlin,cz,ruger(that price range). opinions seem to vary on out of box accuracy. can any one of these be made more accurate than the others? also the 10/22 seems more popular to those who tinker. can the marlins or cz's be repaired(not tricked out) as needed by the average gun owner or do they require special tools or skill?

Fella's;

C'mon, Juliet Tango specifically asked about semi-auto.22 rifles. The Savage MKII is a bolt gun. I've also owned one & it's a damn good rifle, but it isn't on-target in this thread.

I am surprised that you found a CZ semi .22 in the same price range as the Marlins & Rugers. Care to inform us curious folk where you ran across that?

Any/all of them can be made more accurate if the first thing you do is test ammo. Twenty-two's are notoriously picky about what they like to be fed. Buy a lot of different brands of .22lr, and as many variations within a brand as you can find/afford to get. Then conduct serious accuracy testing. It's not at all unusual for a gun that shoots "patterns" with ammo A,B,C, & D, etc., to become a stellar performer simply by shooting ammo Y.

I've seen Ruger 10/22's go from so-so plinker guns to 75 yard one-shot one-kill varmint guns just by finding out what it wants to be fed. Just because your buddie's same make, same model, .22 likes SuperLeadFlinger ammo, doesn't mean your's will too. Two guns with consecutive S/N's can like completely different ammo.

"...can the marlins or cz's be repaired..."

It isn't too likely that they will need repair. That's one of the reasons why people like them so well.

I don't own a CZ semi-auto but I can tell youthat CZ makes a damn good gun. I have shot a 10-22 and can tell you that you are going to have to sink some time/money into it to get it to shoot very accuratly. It will work for plinking/varmits not much else if it is stock.

I would go with the Marlin. I just think they make better rifles than Ruger.:)
