The future of Beretta, and pistols in general?

I watched Equilibrium for the umpteenth time today, and got a hankering to put together a 'futuristic' Beretta. Here's my take:

http://www.phoenixguild.com/images/dreaming.jpg

Making that got me thinking.. what features do we have today that we don't need, and what don't we have that we DO need? A lot of the features I put on mine are obviously for an open carry/military/LE type firearm.. no CCW'ing that bad boy.

The compensated barrel is for looks, I personally think they're a liability on a fighting handgun.

The pistol would have to have some sort of power source, to light the reflex sight and the LED round counter, so instead of crying about how fragile electronics are and how "they're bound to fail when you need them most", I would put the R&D into making them lightweight, low power draw, and rock solid dependable. Although not seen in this picture, I'd include a Lasermax type system as a backup sighting device and visual intimidation tool.

The accessory rail is a draw.. I don't find them personally useful, but they're rapidly becoming ubiquitous, so I guess having the option is always good.

What about you folks? What's your ideal weapon, or just a dream toy?

I don't know what that is a picture of above, but here is a Beretta:

Looks like an exercise in designing OUT reliability.

I'm sure it's a matter of seconds until someone posts that dumbass picture of the Ar-15 with the keyring on it. :) Please bear in mind this was inspired by a *science fiction* movie.. the gun's not serious, the dialog is.

This was the movie gun:

I like the holo sight and the select fire switch!

1911's still look basically the same after almost 100 years, Beretta's designs will probably stay close to the way they are now, too.

Anyone else think that movie was terrible? I feel embarrassed for sitting through the whole thing.

Me, I like the classic lines & the total reliability of the 92fs, so there is very little I would change.

Possibly something along the lines of the FN Five-Seven, if the AWB sunsets.

That pistol holds 20+1 of a high velocity bottlenecked cartridge capable of penetrating a kevlar helmet at 100 yds. Allegedly recoils like +p 9mm in a Glock.

There could be great interest in that if the AWB sunsets (and Wolf makes a cheap practice round!)

Especially if a special unit of a major P.D. adopts it and the advertising blitz is on.

(I'm dreaming the Five-Seven would have an optional quick release/attach shoulder stock that fits in an accessory case on an LEO's belt-no deciding whether to bring the carbine or not...)

You won't be able to buy a Five-Seven if the AW ban sunsets. There's still the matter of the Assault Weapons IMPORT ban of 1989, a seperate law that's not going anywhere. It's the reason that AKs and such need a certain number of US parts in order to have a pistol gripped stock or accept "high capacity" (read- regular 30, 40, 75 round) magazines.

Plus, the fact that this is "armor-piercing handgun ammunition" probably means it'd STILL be illegal even if the 89 and 94 bans BOTH died.

the Five-seveN has a high cool factor, but a $100 CZ-52 with .223 sabot rounds will do the same thing.

Come to think of it, could you rebarrel a modern handgun like a Beretta or HK for 7.62x25 Tok?

Interesting concept gun. I think the the barrel would be threaded instead of ported (like a Mark23, if you need a source image ;) ). Since Beretta came out with the Cougar and maintained the 92/96 line, there's no reason that they would not come out with additional models. S&W is always trying new things, but with varied success.

I might be projecting, but it seems like the hot market of the present and future is going to be "the perfect carry gun" -- getting small, light, narrow, low-recoil, large caliber designs. I'm thinking an even narrower G36 with some not-yet-invented "recoil master"-like technology that makes double-taps more reasonable.

forcefed,

I agree with you. The movie was mostly terrible with some extremely bright and creative moments thrown in (the strobe gunfight and the phenomenal ending gunfight).

Seems like if you were going to have an LED round-counter, you'd want it somewhere where you could see it while in a shooting position, instead of on the side of the grip. Somehow integrated into the red-dot sight maybe?

To each his own. I thought it was one of the best movies of the year. Seriously.

It was 1984 for the high body-count generation. About as close
as you can get these days to making a serious point in an
action flick.

What C.R. Sam said.

Having any sort of round count indicator would only take your eyes off of the front sight.

I would settle for more accurate, more reliable pistols than what we have.

Would you rather have a fast, reliable car; or a slow car that breaks alot but has a DVD player?

Screw the options.

Future fantasy of pistols? The rail driver. Electromagnetic propulsion, powered by a fuel cell or the ever-popular nuclear power plant. The ammo is just steel bullets (no powder, no brass). So you should be able to carry at least 100 .223-like rounds in a mag.

Well, even in the future, the grips come off :) Modify away.

30 round magazines huh?

At the very least. You noticed the fire selector switch, right? ;)

Having any sort of round count indicator would only take your eyes off of the front sight.

I agree.. I think having it in the holosight would be a good idea.

Well, I decided to make my own design of a "futuristic" pistol, as opposed to basing it off of an existing pistol.

http://tedandtom.keenspace.com/images/pistol01.gif

I guess I subconsciously added elements of the Walther design into it, but I pretty much did it from scratch.

It's not select fire, and since it's only a concept drawing, I didn't put anything like safety, decocker, etc. on it.

Anyhoo, to sum it up, it's a striker fired true DA (DA/SA), ultra-compact, comes with threaded barrel, poly frame, Wunder/wondernine. I assume it would also have a cycle-lock so you don't have the "tinkle" of falling brass adding to the sound if you're doing supressed fire. Also, an accessory rail, and, though you can't really see it, night-sights.

And, just to have done some detail, I did up a little logo with my initials and added a little text in a simulated laser-etch.

...

You know, I think I ripped half or more of the design off from the P99.
