Uzi Question

Does anybody know the magazine capacity of the .45ACP Uzi submachine guns? I don't know if IMI ever made these, but Vector of South Africa does.

I know there were 16 round short mags, but what was the standard magazine capacity? 30?

Thanks.

The original Uzi 9mm held 25, not 30. I'm really not sure but 20 sticks in my mind as right.

All I can find info on is the 16 rounders, but I've heard 20 rounders mentioned. Any 9mm Uzi could be converted to .45ACP, apparently, and vice-versa.

Could one be converted to accept 30-round Grease Gun mags? I know they did this with MAC 10s on occasion.

One thing to remember on the mags is some might have been after market ones.
The mags I have for my 9mm UZI are all IMI or Isreali surplus, about the same then.
Their capacities are 25 and 32. I never had the .45 conversion but all the factory mags I've seen were 16 rds. 20rd ones may have been made by IMI but they would be rare I'd guess.

Grease gun magazines are single-feed. That means they feed from the centerline of the magazine. Uzi mags are double-feed and feed from both sides. I suppose they might work in theory, but they are also significantly wider than the uzi's grip. Thompson magazines would definitely NOT work as their tops are too wide to fit into the receiver (and deeper for that matter). What you'd have to do to get the Grease Gun mags to work is replace the grip (weld) grip safety, trigger guard, and probably widen the frame where it contacts the gun. I know they convert M11's to take Sten magazines like this, but then again you can get M11's for under 2 bills.

FWIW, Revelation Arms (http://www.revelationarms.com/accessories.html) will sell you an Uzi lower that's been converted to accept grease gun mags.

The only .45 mags I know of are 10 and 16.

Weapon can be switched to 9mm (or the dead 41AE) with little problem then you can have more 9mm ammo if you choose.

Doesn't it strike anyone as odd that they'd make a submachine gun with a maximum magazine capacity of 16 rounds?

Seems to me that IMI did a conversion kit for Uzi model A and B's for both .41AE as well as 45ACP in the early to mid-80's. The swap involved changing the bolt and barrel/barrel nut assembly. I know they made a few from the factory in .41AE then later .45ACP, but it was cut short by the 1986 legislation, IIRC. Of course, .41AE was cut short because it was .41AE.

Nightcrawler,
16rds of .45 is pretty long.

I think they wanted to keep the mags all about the same length so that's the deal (best I know).

I have some .41's that will shoot .45's so long as they are the shorter truncated bullets. Not sure how many they will hold though. Don't have any handy to check.

I think the .45's may have also been made more to please the American market. Or for the Micro, in which case it's a sweet piece.
