A manufacturing company named CMMG has developed a muzzle loading upper for the AR rifle with a 20 inch barrel. Ignition is achieved by a primed 5.56 (.223) case that's been adapted to take a #209 primer.

The case is loaded through the magazine to shoot and is manually ejected afterward for the next shot.
Everything is nitro coated to be corrosion proof.
The video shows the rifle being loaded and fired with 150 grains of Pyrodex pellets and a Powerbelt bullet.
Now the unit will undergo molecular particle testing for barrel integrity.

Here's the video:

So how's the spark get from the primer to the powder? Seems like it'd be quite a jump.

It's a powerful primer and a narrow case, so the flame must project forward enough to set the pellets off. Loose powder would probably be even easier to ignite.
I wouldn't be surprised if the flame was more powerful at the case mouth than a standard percussion cap. The relative potency of each has probably been tested & measured before.

If that's not a unnecessary solution to a non-existant problem , I've never seen one.

Why? Who would want this?

209s make a hell of a spark. Some brands of small rifle primer make about a 12" long gout of flame. CCI small pistol primers, the "coolest" primer on the market, make a 4" or so long flame. I wouldn't be worried about ignition at all.

Now they need to invent a critter to hunt with this thing .

Imagine hunting with one as a muzzle loader and then being stopped by a game warden? No sir, this is a muzzle loader. Sure.

First it says..
muzzle loading upper for the AR rifle
then
The case is loaded through the magazine
I went back and took time to load the video. Their write up is a little confusing (at least to me). It does muzzle load, so it would be legal for deer in Indiana.

Man, would that freak out the CO.

I guess if they build it, someone will come.....

I suppose it might apeal to those who thing that the AR platform can do it all. They are the ones with the .223 upper for prarie dogs, the 6.8 SPC for social work, .458 SOCOM for hunting big critters, that single shot .50 BMG upper for shooting cars and now this damn muzzleloading thing to take advantage of extra seasons. Where is the shotgun upper for dove season?

CMMG is working on a 12 gauge AR style shotgun but is not releasing details at this time.
There was a picture of the prototype from the 2009 Shotshow floating around. It reportedly looked like it was an AR scaled up in size.
And there's also a Turkish .410 semi-auto AR clone that is being sold in England, Turkey and some other countries but not here yet.
There were also AR10 .308's converted into .410's being sold in Japan.

I was thinking the same thing Gary.

Oh hahaha!

If I wasn't a poor starving college student and I would be so tempted to get this!

Not much in the way of practical use, but I would love to see people's reactions!

People next to me: What are you doing?
Me: Loading my rifle. *Rams down powder and bullet*
People next to me: Uh, you sure you wanna be doing that? *Scooches away a bit*
Me: *Smile and nod*
People next to me: *Scurry further away*
*Boom*
People next to me: *Look for exploded AR* :p

I'd buy one. Looks like fun, and a great way to give people in ban states a way to bother antis.

Sort of the "modern muzzle loader" idea carried to an insane extreme. But no sillier (IMHO) than muzzle loaders with synthetic stocks and scopes.

I'm a traditionalist; never got into flinters but always found them interesting and a challenge.

That ought to be California legal!

It would make an in-liner out of me. I still think the CA DOJ or local DA will try nailing someone for it even if they didn't have a center fire upper.
