There were several attempts by other manufacturers to get around the patented design of the breech loading revolver, as pioneered by S&W in the mid 1800's. One version, like the Merwin and Bray, used a rimless cartridge which utilized a cup shaped primer for ignition. Another front loader design used a cartridge which had a teat-like projection on the head of the cartridge, making it appear like the entire case was upside down when compared to a more conventional cartridge. Neither design was successful in the marketplace, especially as S&W developed new priming techniques and more substantial calibers to be used in their top-break revolvers.
