SIG P239 .40/.357 $550ish blued Two Tone Sigs really tend to comman a premium.
Glock 26,27 $485-$550ish
XD Sub Compact $440ish.

Probably in that order both for price and preference.

I am a SIG guy at heart and feel the P239 is just about the best of the best for what it is intended for. Extremely thin, low recoil, extremely accurate, easy to clean and never malfunctions. Well at least I haven't ever had a malfunction with a SIG.

The Glocks are awesome guns. Super tough finish and tend to be reliable as all get out, they are not, however, as reliable as SIGs in my experience. They are cheaper, probably a little more abuse resistent and hold a larger ammo capacity. They also don't have the best ergonomics for me. They do however work and will fit your needs nicely I believe. Actually they are probably the best bang for the buck.

XD sub compact is a bit of a new comer but feels nicer than then the Glock and has a better trigger. It is only in 9mm at this time. I have only had practical experience with full size XDs but that was very good. These are probably just a bit cheaper than Glocks. For the money thought it is probably worth going with Glock simply for the better finish, history and immense aftermarket support.

Yep.....of course. Kahr makes one of the smallest and best guns on the market....cslinger nailed it earlier but these are WAY WORTH the mention and the look. You will not find a smaller, nicer or accurate pocket gun in the calibers you mention.

Look into them.

Shoot well

forgot about KAHR. Picture a tiny stainless Glock single stack.

I have no practical experience with KAHRs but have heard nothing but good things about the all steel versions. The plastic versions seem to have so teething problems from what I have seen. They will probably fall between the Glock and SIG for prices.

I would even suggest a CZ PCR but it really is getting a tad big to be called a sub compact. Heck the SIG is a tad big to be called a sub compact but due to it's thinness and the fact that it is a SIG :D I will give it a pass.

I had an MK40 and it was hands down the nicest gun to carry I've ever owned. I sold it to finance an AR-15, but I will probably either buy another Kahr, or if I have the money an STI LS 40.

What about the KelTec P11, a basic no-frills defense pistol.

I cant say enough about the Glock sub-compacts. You can get them in 9mm G-26, .40 G-27 and .357 Sig G-33.

I carry the G-27 as my back-up gun when I am on-duty.

I recommend Kahr's line. They run small, smaller, and smallest.

If price is an object, go with the Kel-Tec P11. If price is not an object, go with the Glock 26 or two Kel-tec P11's. Either way you would be well armed.

Kahr has some good designs but spotty quality control and customer service made me concerned. about buying one.

It is VERY important in all pistols but especially small ones that you pick a pistol that fits your hand well. Only one I really like was the SIG P225 - no longer in production. The P239 didn't fit me well, and was kinda big, and heavier. I went in to look at S&W Scandium revolvers and bought a S&W CS9 - 20.8 ounces, 6.25" long, 7+1. They run around $500 new, and used for as little as $350 as carry pistols get beat up cosmetically. Accurate, zero problems. They're very popular.

Once I put a grip sleeve on the CS9 I was all set. I use a High Noon IWB holster.

Hey I like the S&W CS9 and the CS45. Both are great. I would be comfortable with either.

Honestly I don't understand the whole compact pistol thing.

Either I want a pocket gun, that will slip into the front pocket for comfortable carry to zip out the door for those times when you just can't have iron on your hip even IWB or just plain don't want to OR I want a full sized service pistol like a Browing Hi-Power or 1911 for IWB carry. I don't see how a full sized gun is any harder to hide IWB from the general sheep than a "compact" sized gun is, and the full sized is much easier to shoot and holds more rounds, 15+1 for my BHP. I was looking at a Beretta "Pro-Carry" or whatever they call them single stack 92fs knockoff and it was the same basic dimensions as any BHP with about half the ammo capacity  .

I have a Kahr K-9 which I really like, but it's a heavy little bugger for CCW. I just ordered a Glock 27 (.40 cal) yesterday with night sights for $509. After the transfer and shipping, I'm looking at $540. That gun would have cost me $600+ in my local gun stores. Online all the way, man.

In a 9mm sub compact, my current fave is the SIG 239...followed by the Kahr line-up. If you want something w/ an external safety, the small S&W's are nice too (if the grip fits you).

Honestly I don't understand the whole compact pistol thing. The short grip makes them easier to conceal. I was amazed at the difference between a Glock 23 and 27 in an IWB holster.

I just did a lot of research into the very same question and I narrowed it down to either a Kahr 9mm PM9 or a Sig P239.

I realized that while the Kahr is a fine, thin, light pistol, it wasn't worth, to me, the money they're asking. And I could have picked one up new for $500.00 give a little either way.

I bought a Sig P239 in 357 Sig and this pistol is really special. You could easily get this in 9mm or .40 but I wanted the newer cartridge for CCW.

First time out, 150 rounds of FMJ and 20 of Speer Gold Dot 125's and it ran flawless. Hardly any recoil, and a little muzzle flash but nothing bad. I've heard the 9mm is a smooth shooter like a cream puff so if you want something like that, the 9mm would float your boat.

There is NO comparision between a Kahr and a Sig though there is a weight difference. However, with a Milt Sparks VM-2 or similar IWB, there's not too much to worry about re: additional weight.

Good luck.

It depends on whether or not you can carry a SA auto. I have both the STI LS9 and LS40. Smaller and VERY flat, but the .40 has stout recoil, at least to me. I find the 9mm much nicer to shoot. I also have the Kahr MK9, K40 Covert, and P9 Covert. All DA triggers and recoil is not a problem with any of them. The .40 surprised me as did the lightweight P9 Covert.

Well, I have a new XD. It's small. It's new. And it does feel better than a Glock with a better trigger. In fact, I was quit suprised how good the trigger felt. I like it.

I would have to recommend the Sig p239. I picked one up about a month ago and man it is nice. The only problem I have with it is that the hamer bites me in the side, but I have a holster coming to alleviate that problem. Although if one would have been available I would have looked into the Steyr S9 to go along with my M40. I would have got the S9 because I was familiar with and really like it's big brother and it would have been cheaper, plus the M40 has no edges on it that bites. I don't regret buying the Sig by any means, it's just a different gun. I'll don't foresee ever getting rid of either.

Jeff OTMG, how does the STI LS compare to the Kahr MK in terms of size? I'm assuming by the pictures that its thinner but slightly longer and taller. I'm also assuming its a little more accurate.

I just sold my MK40 and am going to want something to replace it with and have always liked the STI (at least on paper).

Jeff OTMG

The gun is thinner and has a MUCH better trigger (SA of course), but it is slightly longer. Unfortunately I am about 1100 miles from my STI's until Monday.

One gun I forgot to mention was the Rohrbaugh, IF THEY EVER START SHIPPING!!!!

I assume that the Dark Side has already chimed in!!
Heck, I don't think you are going to do any better than the G26/27 anyway!!!

Except maybe the Kahr MK9 Elite. Get the Elite 98. It already has had a factory trigger job!! The +P+* rating can't hurt either!!!

Regarding a couple of comments made.....Ya get the HK if you want to wait for the release in another 2 years from HK....sorry.....they are like CZ only double the wait time.

Hell the RAMI will be out early next year.....it comes in a 9mm and 40 and can be cocked and locked or cond 2 carry......hold out if you can.

After owning many Kahrs and a couple of STI's.....are STI's more accurate than the Kahrs?..............NOPE! Once you master the Kahrs trigger, which can be a trick at first......I highy doubt youll see a difference.
The STI's SA trigger does make it easier to shoot more accurately if your new with the guns............................just IMO, of course

Shoot well

I thought we were talking sub compacts here. I would enthusiasticly endorse the G23. I've owned one for a while and it has been a fine shooter. Never a hiccup. Easy to carry and dependable.

In 9mm; Sig P225 or P228; or the CZ P-01
In .40; Sig P229

Just my opinion. What I recommend is what I have experience with.
The following are all in the same weight area of 26oz empty. Rated as follows:

Nine mn.
1.) CZ- PCR Alloy frame, light feel, good grip and balance, double stack
10 round mags and very accurate. Great grip.

2.) S&W 6906 Alloy frame, light well balanced feel, double stack 12 round
mags and almost as accuracte as the PCR. Very good grip.

3.) Sig P239 Alloy frame, top heavy feel, single stack 8 round mags, very
slim grip with a downward protruding trigger housing allowing less
gripping. Very accurate.

I would love to get a polymer sub-compact but with all the negatives one hears, they don't appear to have fixed all the problems.
