I wound up with an old S&W pistol in a package deal but i have absolutly no idea what it is and i can't find any info on it, It is the swing out hand ejector type frame (looks similar to my colt police positive)

It has a round butt, a 5 inch (IIRC) barrel and a very small frame (I think its called an I frame but I have no experiance with this type of gun)

the oddest part of it is that the barrel states that the pistol is chambered in .32 Long Colt, I thought S&W didn't offer any pistols in that chambering as they had a competitor cartridge that they were promoting?

I will try to post pics after work (I need to borrow the camera, mine isn't good enough to do MACRO photos)

bluing is darn near 100% it has one tiney scratch on the frame and it looks like one of the grips has a slight crack developing in the material. (looks like black bakalite)

I didn't pay much for it, (mostly I just wanted to find out more about it)

is there anywhere that has good pics of the various offerings of S&W pistols that I can compare it too?

Thanks

(and yes I know I need to post pics, i will this evening)

I would suspect that your "S&W" is really a Spanish copy of a S&W.

Spanish ripe-off's got to be so prevelent at one time that S&W added the "Marcas Registradas" (Registered Trademark) to all of thier guns markings.

The Spanish, in the mean time, had both S&W and Colt stamped on their guns!
Talk about brand recognition!

Sorry for not getting pics up yet I had an issue with the cammera..

I double checked and It turns out that it said .32 Long CTG. I just missread it (you know youre buisy when you dont have enough time to properly fondle your firearms).

I think it might be a 1903 hand ejector. or possibly a 32 regulation police

A Regulation Police Model would have a square butt, and have wood stocks that wrap around the bottom of the frame where the serial number usually is. As a consequence they stamped the number on the front strap above the mainspring strain screw.

I think that you are correct in suspecting that it is a 1903 Hand Ejector. The serial number should be stamped on the bottom of the butt, rear face of the cylinder, and bottom of the barrel above the ejector rod.

Be careful of those stocks. They are likely hard rubber, and if original to the gun (they'd be serial numbered on the inside) would add to the value of the revolver.

the serial number is 231640, and most of the blemishes in the photo's are dust or just handeling marks (smudges from my fingers, they wipe off) how old is she?

You appear to have a Smith & Wesson .32 1903 Hand Ejector, 5th Chg.

These were made between 1910 and 1917, within a serial number range running from 102,501 to approximately 363,000. 6-shot, chambered in .32 S&W Long. Standard barrel lengths were 3 1/4, 4 1/4 or 6 inches. Cataloged in full blue or nickel plate, The stocks are black hard rubber, and be careful of them as the break easily.

It appears that the hammer and trigger are blued, rather then color case hardened. If so the gun has been refinished sometime in the past.

neat, thanks for the information.

How much does the re-blue hurt the value? (It's probably still worth more than the $127 or so I spent on it, but I'd like to know anyway)

If it was like new it would be worth (give or take) about $350 - $400 on the collectors' market. As it is it would probably be worth half that to a shooter. If the bore and chambers aren't pitted, and it's in good mechanical shape it is well worth what you paid, and then some. They are fine little "plink & play" revolvers, and if there are any ladies in your life and they find out, you may never see it again. :D
