Mossberg 500 mariner (I think thats the full name) with the 26" barrel would do you alot of good. Scour the pawn shops for them. Even if you don't turn up a hunting Mossy, you're likely to find something almost as good. You can also check out Wal-Mart for the Rem870 field/sport models as well. Both should be no more than 300. Used ones will go for about 200-240 from what I've seen, of both makes. Both sell slug barrels and all sorts of chokes, so your hunting needs will be covered.

Either the Mossberg 500 or the Remington 870 will suffice, though there are other choices.
Equally important is what you shoot in it. Use light 2 3/4" loads, preferably 7/8 oz for familiarization.

You didn't say if you have an action preference. For pumps, the Remington or the Mossberg is a very good choice.
In semi autos, you have Remington, Browning, Beretta, Winchester, Benelli, and Stoeger, and some others. A gas operated semi auto will kick a lot less. Everyone will tell you "Oh you can use light loads, blah, blah" , but shot for shot, a gas auto will deliver less felt recoil than any other design. This can get to be a big deal if you find you really like killing clays.
I would suggest trying to at least handle as many as you can, and pick which one feels best to you. I could wax on about how much I like Remingtons, and someone else loves Berettas, and yet another sleeps with his Browning, and someone else has a Stoeger that doesn't kick a bit, but you need to get what fits you best. And if a salesman starts pimping a particular brand, remember a lot of them are on comission.

Ty,
If you do get a shotgun and take it to the skeet or trap range, don't refer to it as a "shotty" unless you want to be laughed at by the veterans. It's kind of like your wife or girlfriend referring to something as a "thingy". It just isn't the masculine way of referring to a shotgun. :D

I always think of the kewl kids in school: "Got me a shotty."
My favorites though are the guys who ask things like "Whatcha packing?" or "You carrying a piece?" or "You got heat?"
Peace out, Dude.

I always thought it was because 'shotty' requires less vocal effort to pronounce. Apathy--it's the american way.
"I got my AK, my XD, my Colt, my AR...etc."
I guess that is why alot of people really like Glocks, lol

Go with the mossberg 500. The maverick 88 is preety much the same but much easer on your wallet I have no problem with it.

I had the same criteria, and got a Mossberg 500 pump 54169. Comes with two barrels. $300.
