I just killed/restarted the SQL server -- there was about a 2 minute period where you may have run into MySQL errors -- ignore 'em.

It's now 11:43 EST, and I think I found and fixed the slowness problem. Let me know if I was wrong.

It's 1:49 EST and, compared to BRC, RimfireCentral and GT, it is really slow.

Still pretty slow on this end, but we had some nasty T-storms come through the area, so that might be masking an improvement in performance.

Haven't seen it go completely unreachable, but seems slow loading.

Have gotten this

"The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings."

twice in the last half hour on two different HSD networks. Both times a second try brought up thread/post.

Over the past 15 minutes it has slowed CONSIDERABLY.

It's taking multiple attempts to fully load pages, and often multiple attempts to get a thread to open.

All right, I've got my provider's hold music on the phone. Working on it -- don't be shocked if we become unavailable for 30 seconds at a time (resetting the router).

Just got off the phone with tech support, and everything looks clean from the router on up. Everything on this side is clean as well, and running smoothly.

And yet I still get time-outs connecting to web sites, and a refresh a few seconds later generally fixes the problems.

Apparently there are still a lot of problems due to the MS worm going around (tech support hold-time was 2 hours, when it's usually instantaneous), and it's doing things like really taxing name-servers and making some (large) demands on bandwidth.

Unless I've missed something obvious, the problem ain't on this end, and there's not much we can do about it.

:(

Are you still experiencing conenctivity issues?

Any way to de-fibberlate this board, or otherwise back-feed it a few thousand volts? Couldn't hurt...:D

That may well be one of the tools in Derek's little black bag. :D

Whether posting while using the "submit" icon, or doing a search for a topic or username. If I hit the stop icon in my browser, and try the same forum function a second or third time, it usually goes through.

On this end, it's XP Pro, IE6, on an IBM Intellistation dual P-III, through a Linksys Broadband cable router/firewall and cable modem to RoadRunner (BrightHouse).

I've notice there's still quite a bit of activity on the cable modem light, so I'm assuming the recent worms are alive and well out there in network land. I'll have to map the inbound pings later and see where they're coming from. :(

I have had 115 blocked intrusion attempts in the last hour. Dial up.

Site function problems similar to G-98s.

Have had no site problems workin eBay tho in this same period.

First sign of any slowness was within the last couple hours. Lots of "page unavailable" stuff happening. As soon as I hit the refresh button, pages load immediately.

Hmm, just noticed something else: When I click on a smilie, the page just scrolls to the top. (No smilie) I then have to scroll down to center this reply field and then type out the text for the smilie. Is that just me? Didn't start until, well, a couple hours ago when the 'slowness factor' kicked in.

C.R.Sam

Just tested the smilie problem. All worked normal for me.:) :( :o :D

FWIW I am running Mozilla Firebird.

I'm having some problems, too, but it's hard to say whether it's this board or my ISP -- Drunken Monkey Connectivity (you wish)...

Darrin
August 31, 2003, 01:23 AM
Well, the smilie problems went away, but pages are still loading slow or not loading at all.

FWIW, I'm running a 386 with 2MB of RAM and a 20MB HDD. Maybe I should upgrade to one of those Plentiam Processors? ;)

Both THR and ARFCOM are slow or non-responsive right now. eBay, MSN, Battlerifles.com, my webmail, my work website and several others are as fast as they've ever been, so I don't think it's my ISP.

Sven
August 31, 2003, 09:35 PM
Same here - all other boards are giving me instant response. THR is the only board or site that has been consistently timing out lately. :(

The odd thing is that if I hit a link and THR doesn't respond almost immediately then I know that if I wait I'll get a "The operation timed out when attempting to contact www.thehighroad.org" error. However, if when I click and it doesn't respond I just click again on the link about half the time it will go ahead and respond immediately.

This is from my cable modem here in TN and also via my brother-in-law's DSL line when I was in Texas this past week.

I am having the same problem with timeout messages. It is only doing it on The High Road. When I get the timeout message I can try again and most of the time it will load then.

Please be patient as we work to resolve this. It may be something upstream in the network.

Is this site being attacked by anti-Second Amendment bigots?

It gets a little better for awhile, then it gets worse, then it gets lots worse, then I can't get here at all. I'm no one's idea of a techno-wizard, but I have to wonder whether leftist extremists might not be up to something malicious.

BryanP
September 3, 2003, 11:49 AM
Hey Wolf, check the tin foil on your hat, I think it's come loose. :D

If it was a Denial Of Service attack of some sort the ISP would have noticed by now.

Oddly enough THR seems quite quick and responsive from work, both yesterday and today.
