I bought the following pistol at an estate sale and know absolutely nothing about Lugers
I do not have any pictures right now.

Can you tell me anything about it? Date? Origin? Or where I may find more info on this pistol?

DWM Luger with proof marks ‘N’ and a small crown.
( I saw the ‘N’ inside it also)

Has a 4 digit serial #xx68 on it with most of the small parts showing just the last 2 digits 68

about a 4 inch kind of fat barrel – very worn,

The magazine has a cracked wood knob at the end and is hard to pull out-some pitting and rust on the sides

The wood checkering is very worn – almost flat- and one of the side pieces is loose.

The pistol has some rust on the inside but not a lot and is very dirty like it’s never been scrubbed or cleaned

It was a novelty buy, not something to shoot. However the sellers wife told me her husband did shoot it once in awhile.

It came with a black holster, newer looking barrel that was tapered and blued, and a very old box of german ammo stamped 1945.

I know this not much info but any help would be great if you chose too,

Sounds kind of rough, but a matching Luger is bound to be of some interest.

Does it not have a date over the chamber?
Does it have a stock lug on the butt?
Is there a faint small letter after or under the serial number on the front of the frame under the barrel?

Crown-N proofmark indicates manufacture sometime between 1912 and 1939. Usually. Maybe.

Get those pictures.

Yes it has a stock lug on the butt
( in my readings this morning i just learned what that was)

yes the small letter or mark under the serial numbers on the barrel looks like a backwards J - above that is the crown and the N

i read somewhere the matching 2 digits on the small parts only got stamped on 'military' not commercial lugers?..any truth to that?

its on the waiting period hold right now-i'll stop by again and take some pics

Most commercial Lugers had "hidden" matching numbers where they were out in the open in the Military Lugers.

With all the possibilities, I think we should wait for the pictures and more info.

last two digits of the 4 digit serial # are stamped on the small parts. the frame and barrel parts also have the #s and a crown with a N. it does say 'gieshert' on the safety
