Improving the Vaquero sight picture

I've had a Ruger Vaquero for a while (and bought a second, a Birdshead gripped one, as soon as they came out), and, while I love their classic looks, durability, and ability to handle hot loads, I dislike the sight picture. It's especially bad because mine are stainless and every bit of light in the world seems to glint off of both the front and back sights. So, I came up with a solution. I took flourescent orange model car enamel, and painted a nice large aiming dot on the front sight, and blacked out the rear sight with flat black model car enamel. The sight picture is so much improved, it's like a different gun. As I'll be taking one of my Vaqueros as a backup while hunting this fall, I really wanted to make sure I could pick up those sights if I needed to. While this modification isn't SASS legal (for those who compete in CAS, I don't), it really does improve the utility of my guns.

A little lamp black on the front sight does wonders, and you can wipe it off the sides with little effort.

The best way to improve the sight picture of the Vaquero is to trade it for a Blackhawk. :)

I too prefer the Vaquero, mine is blue and faux case colored so the sights are pretty easy to pick up. The stainless seem to be much more difficult, especially in the sun.

It sounds like you've made a good improvement though....good idea.

I use orange nail polish on my stainless model 65's front sight and "Sight Black" not only around the rear but also even up the sight channel a bit to reduce glare. Works great for me.
