brownwood. closest places are abeline and waco. still hour drive n 4 dollars a gallon in my lifted tj on 33's aint cheap.

I feel your pain with the TJ mine gets about 13mpg on a good day. I've found that ordering the bullets themselves on the internet is the best approach. As for powder and primers Praco gun shop has the cheapest prices in town. Once you figure in haz-mat fees for the powder and primers it is cheaper to buy them locally. Hewitt gun shop sells reloading supplies but they're prices are a little steep. Brass I have been collecting at the range.

Check your local range. Sometimes guys will get together and do a group order, to split the hazmat charge.

It is possible to get powder cheaper on the net but you have to order a lot of it. There are sometimes group buys on this forum and others that can make it cheaper buy buying large quantities for many people.

For 6gal gas @$4 and sales tax.
That pays for the Haz Mat and shipping usually. So the net is cheaper (at least for me).

I decided to buy my primers and powder locally, even though it is a little higher. Both Cabelas and Sportsmans are more expensive than online, but adding in shipping and Hazmat more than made up for it. I'm at those places anyway, so I'm not spending any more on gas. Maybe once I get my C&R it will be cheaper with the discount. Have to see then.

A member and I just did a big order from powder valley. Split two hazmats worth of components and shipping to Austin. It was originally posted it here in the reloading forum, keep your eyes open.

As far as Waco there isn't any suppliers up there. If your in North Austin Sportsmans Warehouse has the best prices around. Don't even waste the gas driving down to Cabelas. They are about 5 bucks per 1k primers and 5 bucks per 1lb of powder higher than SW.

The best way is to mail order a bunch. I would have liked to have ordered more but funds limited me. Another reason is selection. I needed Rem small rifle BR primers. Nobody has those anywhere around here. Also don't forget no sales tax. You order more than 250 there is the hazmat.

the only problem with mail ordering primers and powder is the $20.00 haz mat fee they tack onto each. inless you are buying in quanity, you will loose everyting you are trying to gain with the shipping charges. for me, it is better to just pay the extra and let my gunsmith make a living!

My local places generally want just too much coin. I'll buy at most a pound of powder if I'm all out or a couple hundred primers maybe but at $30 per 1000 primers and $25+ per pound locally (plus sales tax) it adds up.

Do an internet buy and just do a big stock up order. Powder Valley has such competitive prices that if you buy maybe $200 or more of stuff you'll come out ahead, maybe way ahead. My first order from them I spent about $310 for a bunch of powder and primers, including the shipping and including the hazmat fee (a flat $20 extra IIRC). I added up what I got and the same stuff even at my local gunshow would have been at least $345 or more, plus the $8 to get in (that's almost half the hazmat fee!) plus sales tax.

Powder Valley has great prices (like $22 per 1000 primers vs $30 locally) it doesn't take much of an order to make up the S&H & hazmat. There are other internet places that are good too.

You don't have to order much to cover the fees. With prices around here you could order 5k primers and save enough to just about cover the fees.
