700P first day at the range

Oh, baby!
Bought it used over on AR-15.com. 700P (.308, 26" barrel) with Leupold VX2, 3-9x50, and Shilen aftermarket trigger.
Put it together Sunday, took it out at lunch today. Took 6 rounds to get it sighted in. Then I shot 2 groups (3 rounds each). One was a ragged hole. Other was two holes touching with the "flier" 1/4" away (outside spread was less than 3/4"). Used Georgia Arms' 168 gr Ultra Match Moly Coated. WOW!
I'm happy and impressed. Now I need to find a club with long range targets! This is so cool

Sounds like a good rifle; however, you might want to bump up that scope power for long range shooting!

Only accurate rifles are interesting - congrats! Be advised that the proper way to measure groups (5 rounds!) is center-to-center. So you can measure from outer edge to outer edge, then subtract .308".

Nero-
I'm selling my underutilized Superposed to fund the new scope.
Any suggestions? Would like to keep it sub $1000. Also, any recommendations on rings/mounts? I would love a set of high quality detachable rings. Do they exist?
Dave, OK it seems to shoot sub .5 moa. Prior owner send me a 5 shot target with 4 in one hole and one just a touch away. I'll put 5 in next target and see what I can do.

Badger: I'd think any of the Vari-X-III Leupold target or varmint scopes would work fine for you. Leupold makes quick-detach rings, but I've never had a reason to "quick detach" any of my scopes, so I don't use 'em. I don't believe that it's likely that the QD rings would be as stable/accurate as a more solid mounting system.
Check out varminthunters.com and benchrest.com for opinions from guys who do this stuff all the time. You probably will not want a really high-power, eg, 36X, fixed-power benchrest scope.
If you reload, you'll probably be able to shrink your groups by experimenting with o.a.l., bullet weights/designs and different powders.

A good scope to get, IMO, is Leupold's 8.5-24X50 or 6.5-20X50 Long Range (30mm maintube/side parallex adjust). I have an 8.5 modded my Premier for mildots and M1 turrets (Leupold now sells this model from the factory) for under $1K. It's mounted with Leupold's QR (not QRW - Weaver). I take the scope off of the rifle (old Win Mod70 Custom SS) when I store the gun in my safe. It saves a lot of space in the rifle area of the safe and prevents the scope and other rifles from getting dinged up. I'm always within ½" at 100 yds after reattaching the scope.

I use the Leupold QRW rings and bases and they are damn solid. I have been very impressed with them, especially for the $$. I have a Rem 700 VS in 308 with a Leupold M1 and it is very accurate as well.
I would, however, recommend higher power than the 3x10-40 for long range, 400+. I am thinking about selling my 3x10 and going with the M1 6x20-50. My eyes suck, though..
Good shooting!!

'Nother vote for the 8.5x25x50 LR (30mm tube, side focus). I've got one on my 700vs in .308, and it's fine.
