I already did a thing about what guns I'd like to see in .45. But what about 10mm?

For me:

Walther P99

HK USP

Colt Gov't Model

Ruger GP100

MAC-10 (or closed bolt semiauto equivalent....) :evil:

I'd love to see:

1) a new "ValueLine" 10mm S&W autoloader, patterned after the 1066;

2) a S&W N-frame "Mountain Gun" revolver in 10mm Auto (they've issued one in every other caliber, including 45acp);

3) a CZ-97B in 10mm (w/ 10rd mags);

4) a Stainless Steel Sig 220 in 10mm (w/ 10rd mags);

5) a Winchester or Marlin lever action carbine ( 16.5" barrel) in 10mm.

This is easy. I've already seen this gun in my mind a thousand times;

a Thompson M1 'tommy gun' with a 16" barrel in 10mm. Make it in stainless steel with a matte/bead-blast finish, and give it black or OD synthetic furniture.

Now that would be cool.

I'd like to see Smith & Wesson bring back the 1006, otherwise, a CZ-97 in 10mm would be great. EAA has the Witness and I am tempted, but they seem to have a lot variation in quality control. I do have a Colt Delta Elite and it is nice, but the 1911 Government is the minimum platform for 10mm.

classic full size SIG would be great now that they make stronger slides but can the aluminum frame handle full-house 10mm? ST models only is more likely.

a lot of states like Ohio have handgun hunting regulations that mandate a straight-wall case cartridges so 10mm is ideal for people that want to use an automatic. a lot of states require long 5'' or more barrels so maybe Glock, SIG and CZ could make a longslide versions in 10mm. 10mm has it's niche and if only people would just make the guns for it.

Considering the 10mm to be only semi-popular these days, the gun manufacturers have a choice...

1) Revitalize the caliber by creating new plarforms for this versitile cartrige.

2) Continue to let the caliber flounder (its demise will eventually occur)

I know there are many guys here at THR and other forums that will deny the 10mm's popularity is suffering. We all want to believe that our own likes are the best things going and every else agrees with us. In the case of the 10mm, this is simply not the case, and the manufacturers are at least partially liable.

If it were me, i would begin at the beginning. Get a major manufacturer that has a reputation for taking chances, as well as a good engineering dept. and get the Bren X/Peregrin Falcon off the ground. I am one of the many who have fired a Bren, but has never had the cash to obtain one. I have used a CZ97 and was not that impressed. While the Bren was a loose copy of the CZ design, the two DO NOT feel or handle similarily. If a reputable company could accomplish the impossible here, there would be a ground swell of buyers drooling to get a Bren... with a couple of magazines too.

Ruger and Sig are the next logical designs to incorporate the 10mm if they found if profitable (ie that is why they are in business). The P90 would be a great affordable weapon and would give the Witness a run for its share of the business. A SIG P220st I think would be awesome, and would be a nice addition to my own collection.

I guess we will have to see as only time will tell.

Not meant to flame, but I think the Bren is one of the ugliest handguns going. Heavy and blocky, makes a Ruger look svelt. I would have zero interest if they were available again.

Monkeyleg - I think the question was directed towards handguns. But you have a point in that a Barrett M82 in 10 mm wouldn't have any recoil. :D

HK UMP in 10 mm would be good. A Calico would also be interesting too. Should be bull-pup configuration though.

A Ruger Super Redhawk for handguns.

10mm, while never destined to be screamingly popular, is probably never going to entirely vanish, either. (Think .41 Magnum) Actually, it's experiencing a small renaissance right now, with more guns offered in the caliber than any time in the last ten years.

Justin
August 31, 2003, 03:08 PM
Concur with Tamara.

Anecdotal evidence would seem to support that the 10mm has a small but growing cadre of supporters. I would think that word of mouth and the internet have had a fairly big hand in helping the 10mm along, as it's gone from a cultish round only heard about in hushed whispers to something that is fairly available. (Heck, even Long's Drug sells factory loads of 10mm!)

While it's unlikely to ever reach the popularity of a 9mm or .45 ACP, that is sort of built into the round. After all, it's quite versatile, and the sort of thing that is prone to tinkering. To get the best performance out of 10mm for your needs you have to roll your own, regardless of whether the intended purpose is hunting or just plinking.

Or maybe I'm just in love with the mystique of the round. I don't even own a 10mm.

:p

The Reverend
August 31, 2003, 03:25 PM
Chuck - Not everybody likes the lines of Bren, but the CZ design has been copied the world over. I happen to think the Glock design is the ugliest thing going at the moment, but I would be a fool to allow that personal preference to effect my belief that they are also some of the most durable and utilitarian handguns available.

As far as comparing them to the current Ruger design... The P series from Ruger are EXTREMELY durable, and very affordable. Like most things Ruger, you probably get the "biggest bang for you buck" than with most other brands. But I would have to say that besides the Bren being a large weapon, they are well balanced, at least from my experience. If Rugers are anything, they are fat. Some of the thickest handguns out there, some have said. But as with most things, that's what makes living here in the USA great... To each his/her own.

Happy shooting!

Tamara - Its good to hear the 10mm is experiencing something of a resurgence. Your comment leads me to believe that my initial statement was at least partially correct. Unless the manufacturers believe the 10mm to be a profit making caliber, thus produce new platforms for it, the caliber will go the way of the dodo. I'm again glad to hear that the manufacturers are not deaf to what many are saying.

God Bless!

I am in agreement with the Reverend and Tamara on this.

Firstly, I would love to see someone with the engineering, finances, and market presence take up the Bren project and bring it back to life.

Secondly, there are more 10mm guns out there than I can remember ever. There have been 10mm revolvers from Smith & Wesson. Dan Wesson recently introduced a 10mm 1911 called the Razorback. There is word from Kimber that they are going to do a run of 10mm and 38 super guns, and just this week came word from Hartford that Colt is going to do another 10mm 1911, based on the Special Combat Government model.

Someone said they wished there was a full size and compact Glock. There are. The Glock 20 is the full size 10mm, and speaking from personal experience a hoot to use at the range. The baby Glock version for 10mm is the Glock 29.

What we as 10mm fans have to do is get the word out to others about what is available and how good a cartridge it is. Then we have to let the factories know what we want and then back that up with $$$$.

CZ-75B in 10mm would be great. They already make it in .40S&W so it shouldn't be hard to do.

I think they would have to rework the grip geometry in order to fit the longer .45acp and 10mm cartridges. Until that happens, the Witness 10mm guns are CZ clones.

The big problem with the Witnesses, in my opinion, is the company that imports them. By all accounts, EAA has the worst customer service of any gun company, with the possible exception of Hesse. But then, Hesse weapons don't have warranties, IIRC, so it's not that they lack good customer service, it's that they lack customer service period.

:scrutiny:

Cartridge OAL is way too long; 10mm needs a gun designed around the .45 ACP in order for the magwell to be long enough.

Agree with Garrettwc's summary; I'd add that another choice for a "mini" 10mm is Tanfaglio's all-steel compact Witness in that caliber. It compares to their full-size version the way the Glock 20/29 do.

But, as mentioned, there's the issue of "hit-or-miss" QC with Witness pistols. And dealing with Tanfaglio's importer, EAA, is another issue in itself. :rolleyes:

... that the "rebirth" of the Bren never materialized. Though the Bren doesn't suit eveyone's taste for style, it still holds a certain place in 10mm history.

As to the Glock versions, as previously touched upon, the G20 and G29 are available. The G20 is the full size version, while the G29 is marketed as a sub-compact(hence Major Sub status in GSSF matches). So, by Glock's own placement, there is no compact 10mm Glock, in the G19 type mold. A 10mm compact Glock, with say a 4.125" to 4.2" length barrel and a 12 to 13 round capacity(hey, push for the 94 AWB to sunset... push REAL HARD). Another use for the compact Glock topend would be on top of a G36 type single stack frame with 8 or 9 round capacity. Hmmm, maybe with G10 and G11 as their "nomme de Glock"?

I'll second, third, fourth or whatever, the re-introduction of the S&W 10xx series, especially that "value-line" entrant! Maybe we'd even get to finally have the proto'ed 10xx sub-compact that never made it to production(hey, when you dream, go big!).

Doesn't the Sig P220ST have a stainless frame as well as the stainless slide? The 10mm conversion is "doable", but that'll be a steep priced conversion, as you'd need abarrel as well as mag alterations to feed the 10mm. Also, if trying to convert the 220ST, how would you handle the larger breech face of the slide? I'd rather spend the money on a factory 10mm 220ST(are you listening SIG?!?)

On the Tan Witness front... well, the Witness offers such a nice possibility of options... so disapointing on delivery of CS support(and I can speak to that directly).

Not only are there more firearms now available for the 10mm than ever before, there are also more ammunition manufacturers. Sure, some are not the "majors", but they are there in the market, none the less. Texas Ammunition, Georgia Arms, CorBon, Glaser, Magsafe, Triton(?), RBCD and now Double Tap(yeow!!!, 700+ Ft/lbs of energy from all but one of the currently available DT loadings!!!). Even some Wally Worlds are beginning to stock the 10mm UMC loading(at least around my location they are).

So, we can't easily have a H&K MP5/10. We do have a couple of AR top ends and the CCU conversion units for both the 1911 and Glock frames.

What we need to do is to make sure the manufacturers know we do buy and that the 10mm IS making a return to some type of popularity.

We(the 10mm community) do a have a building momentum! Let's keep it going!

Seeing how they made a 220 in both 9mm and .38 Super in addition to .45, the breechface issue seems like less of a problem. .38 Super uses the same or similar dimensions for the breech face and barrel blank as the 10mm in 1911 pattern pistols, so they have a slide (although the older version non-SS version) already dimensioned properly for the 10mm. Little redesign needed, provided the design can take the increased cartridge thrust loads from the full power 10mm rounds.

My vote would have to be for more 10mm handguns of any kind, and carbines for that matter. I don't see it as the king of auto pistol calibers as some do but I definitely like the option.

For those of you wanting a 10mm H&K, I have one :p

I converted a USP40F to 10mm. I just have to do a little tweaking to the mags and I'm good to go :)

Also, there was a guy that did a 10mm conversion to a P7M10. That would be cool.

The USP in 10mm isn't too hard, you just use Para P16 mags. I am playing with STI mags for it as well as I think they will accomodate the 10mm a little better. Ream the barrel a little deeper and ideally replace the plastic mag catch with a metal one from the .45 USP's (although HK claims to no longer make a metal mag catch). That's it.
