Local LEO reaction to NC Reciprocity

Both our county sheriff and city police chief are quoted in this morning's paper as being favorably disposed to the recently passed reciprocity law which allows out of state concealed carry permitees to carry in North Carolina.

"I think it's a great thing," says Sheriff Breedlove.

"Concealed-carry laws have not been a problem for us or law enforcement in general, in my opinion," Chief Allen said. "As far as crime, we have very few contacts with people carrying concealed-weapon permits."

We may be a small, poor county with many problems, but it's nice to know our rights are being respected by those who enforce the laws.

Generally, the smaller city and rural county guys "Get It", while the urban areas don't.

If only NC and SC could work out some arrangement. Carry in VA and TN is nice, but I get to SC a whole lot more often.

Jack 19,

Breaking story: As of 1:08PM 8/25/03, SC recognizes NC CWP's and people with SC CWP's may now carry legally in North Carolina.

Details here: http://www.scfirearms.org/

South Carolina has announced reciprocity with North Carolina. So, West Virginia remains the lone southeastern state holdout. I hope that comes too, as I travel through there on my way back to Indiana.

Check the following link for the updated SC/NC information:

LEOs from smaller jurisdictions are generally freer from the political intrigues of a large, politically correct city. Hurrah for the guys in the little agencies!

Interesting.

Given the relative size of this area (and it’s ever increasing urban nature) I think we’re fairly lucky here in Columbia. The sheriffs of both large counties that encompass us are fairly vocally pro-gun. SLED usually stays neutral. Most of the rank & file seem to approve.

Certainly is nice to have the majority of LEOs on our side.

Not to hijack the thread, but SC now needs to enter reciprocity with GA.

I lived in both Richland and Lexington counties between 1981-93. I met my wife in Columbia and my son was born at Richland Memorial Hospital, so SC will always be like a second home state to me.

Ever increasing urban nature is right. I don't get down as often as I would like, but when I was in Lexington last Labor Day weekend I was amazed how much the town had changed.

Please explain what SLED is to us Yankees? Is that the wooden thing you slide down hills on in Enero or Febrayo? State po-po???

Good work North Carolina! Keep it up.

Doug Add,
Agreed. The term “urban sprawl” should have been invented here. The population centers are spreading out like kudzu. ‘Burbs are springing up everywhere. We only moved here five years ago, but the changes are quite noticeable even to us. Lexington itself is the fastest growing area in the entire state. Exponential expansion in progress!

El Tejon,
SLED - State Law Enforcement Division – state po-po.
Kudzu – weed infesting the southeast, overgrows everything! (inserted just in case;) )

Does anyone know if Georgia recognizes NC CCW?

Yes, Georgia does recognize the NC CHP. Go here to see a full listing:

Good article! The LEOs I've had contact with around here are very supportive about CCW also.

Great news about SC! Now if we could just do something about that "public assembly and places that charge admission" garbage.

Okay, I'm with Raistlin. If GA honors NC permits and NC honors SC permits then when the heck is GA and SC gonna honor each others?!?!:banghead:

Cool9mm and Raistlin,

It ain't gonna happen. The requirements for reciprocity in SC are that training and qualifications be similar (or better) to what SC requires to get a CWP. Georgia requires no training to get a CWP, as I understand it. You only have to have the approval of a judge or magistrate or something like that. I can't remember which.

DMK, absolutely right. I guess , technically, this means we can't carry when we go to the movies, or to a play, or baseball game, etc. I guess at a baseball game they've also got us on the serving alcohol restriction.

Just our rulers deciding what's best for us.

To North Carolinians,

You can also check out http://www.jus.state.nc.us

Click on Crime and Law Enforcement and then Concealed Handgun Reciprocity Information and then view the states. This is updated all the time.

SLED = State Law Enforcement Div.

When they stopped me recently, the LEO asked "Do you have any I.D.?" and I said "About what?";)

You're close - you go to your county's probate court and apply. They have you do the paperwork, then fingerprint you and run the background check. Unless you're a felon, you'll get the permit.

I guess in SC they think all the crooks have had weapons training, just no permits.... :scrutiny:

The training thing is a red herring. As I mentioned some time ago to El Tejon when he was going to apply for his Fla. oos resident permit, Fla. recognized Pa. permits & vice versa. Fla. has training requirements, Pa only requires a warm, non felonious body. Saved me $127. I`m sure there are other examples.

"...being favorably disposed to the recently passed reciprocity law..." Yep, that's all very well and good. However, he is still a civil servant and as such should have no say whatsoever, good or bad, about any legislation. Up here, the Cdn. Assoc. of Police(cop union) are shooting their mouths off all the time about our registry legislation. Originally all in favour of it, although now they say it does no good and costs too much. So did and does the media.
If you or I ever said anything about how the company we work for was run we'd be fired. So should the tax payer's employees.
