like so many of these questions this is subjective.
i have seen deer killed with both. i did all my "gun" learning back in the late 60's early 70's, and the writers all recomended 170 because you realy did not gain any real fps or trajectory advantages with the 150 but like i said i have seen them work and do not think the deer knew the difference.

The conventional wisdom is that the 170 has more "thump", but shoot the one your rifle shoots best. Either will put a deer down with authority.

Around here it's 150 grain for deer and 170 grain for hogs.;)

either will work very well. use the one that is most accurate in your rifle!:)

My reasoning is that I like the flatter trajectory of the 150. I use a peep sight, and sighted to hit three inches high at 100 yards, and from my tests on paper, I'd be comfortable shooting a deer at up to 200. I know the rifle/bullet combo will do the job farther out - - I'm just not confident in the iron sight/aged eyes combo.:D

I'd certainly want to use the 170 if I were to carry my '94 in an area where elk or bear might be a possibility. This is pretty far fetched - - - There are none in my area, and when I hunt out of state, I use a different rifle.

Best,
Johnny

I liked the 170's in my 30-30. I figured that in this puny cartridge I better get all the penetration I can. The 170 SHOULD penetrate more.

170. I hunted elk with a Marlin 30-30 for a long time.

170. this is not a speedy cartridge and while the 150's may increase velocity some, i don't think it is worth sacrificing the thump available to the 170's.

my open-sighted marlin is restricted to 125 yards.

I've killed an antelope at 200 with a scope marlin 30-30 just to prove it could be done.

Clean kill.
