how do these two compare?

the ching system looks a little heavier -- and more involved installation, given the extra inletting.. am I right in assuming that the XS system just mounts on top of the barrel while the ching mount encircles the barrel?

Other than that..is there a real difference between them? Do they both work? Are they both aluminum, or is one steel?

Don't know about the Ching thing, but the XS mount definitely sits on top - attached at the forward holes on the receiver and the rear sight dovetail (on the Winchester 94) and is aluminum. Also on the Winchester, they want you to epoxy it down, but I have a plan, as yet untested, to avoid doing that.

Kaylee:

The Ching Ring is steel, and because it is completely in front of the receiver ring you can mount the scope a bit lower than with the Ashley version, which extends backward over the receiver ring for attachment to the scope base mounting holes. Also, while I have only limited anecdotal data, I suspect that the Ching Ring, which supports the chamber area and provides an extended bedding area, stiffens the barrel slightly and contributes to accuracy.
