Hi folks, Im headed to Afghanistan in a few months and was hoping for a little help on something. I was looking to get a new optic to go on my m4 besides the standard issue aimpoint cco. I was looking at the acog as i like the features that it has including the lack of batteries and it now having a little red dot. What are some pros and cons and what are some other options?

It's about an ideal CQB scope. But before you go out and spend your own money on it, make sure you can't get it through your unit. Apparently Trijicon just got a new contract with the Army.

bragood, there are several dozen different varieties of ACOG. I assume you are talking about the TA31DOC based on the comment of it having a red dot on top of it.
The red dot is a 7MOA dot and requires a different cheek weld than the ACOG. Before I tried it, I didn't give much credit to those who complained about the difference; but they were correct. It was an annoyance for me.
Also not sure how well the 7MOA red dot works with night vision if you need that option; but if you also have an Aimpoint that may not be an issue.
