My opinion? Too little attention to detail and horrible customer service.
I have a PT-138 that is complete garbage with things wrong with it that shouldn't have happened if their attention to detail of what goes out of their shop was decent. I also have a Rossi revolver (taurus aquired rossi) and it's the same way. Screws coming loose on the first range trip.
My dad has a PT1911 and he hasn't had a problem with but the finish is marginal at best, as is every 1911 I've looked at. Several people have complained of their 1911 safeties breaking.
Their horrible customer service is well documented here alone.
Most of their guns are great and don't cause a problem. However the ones that are crap could have been easily been caught before they were shipped but we always hear of people with Taurus guns with stupid little things going wrong.
If you want an entry level gun on the cheap and don't mind playing Craps on whether you get a good one or a lemon, then Taurus is the way to go.

I like Taurus well enough. Out of 6 I've bought over the last few years, only one has needed service and they took care of it in a timely manner, so I can't complain based on personal experience. The one that had a problem should have been caught at the factory though, I noticed it when looking it over but bought it anyway because it was the only one they had, and I wanted it.

No way this thread becomes a peeing contest.
Me personally? Not a fan. However, some folks love theirs and have had great success.

I have a Taurus .38 Titanium snubbie, and I absolutely love it. The fit and finish couldn't be better. The pistol is perfectly timed, and performs flawlessly. I haven't had any issues, or any need to contact customer support.
I know it's not a 1911 clone, but it does show that not all Taurus products are inferior. I'd say, be sure you examine the exact pistol you're looking to buy, and make sure it meets your expectations. For the price, you can't beat it, but that's a pretty low price. You can get a really nice XD45 for that money!

Makes some awful good guns, and they make some awful guns. Part of it is what model you buy and part of it is what day and which assembly line did it come off of. Quality control is a little less than sterling sometimes but even Chrysler or Cadillac can have a bad day. I have no bias against Taurus and there are a few I would love to have but I want to take a closer look than if I was buying from a company like Kimber.

the price is apparently my dealers cost. i already have a polymer gun, actually 2.
what im really looking to do is buy an entry level 1911, preferably stainless. to me it seemed like the pt1911 had all the bells and whistles of a high end 1911 for a entry level price.

I've already written about my dealings with them multiple times here and at TFL, no use in beating that horse again.
They are great gun if you don't plan on shooting it much.
They have a great warranty, until you try to use it.
If you get one, good luck, and I hope you enjoy it. A few people never have a problem with them.

carry my 24/7 every day, when i carry a BUG it's a rossi snubbie in .38, and the bed-side gun is a 6 in. Rossi .357
i guess i like them a lot... they made every hand gun i currently own

My Judge is awsome as is my .357 tracker. I like my pro .45 but my buddy had the same gun and the trigger fell out at the range...very funny but poor design if you ask me. It took about 8 weeks for him to get his gun back. No problems since then.
Like all things, sometimes you get a good one sometimes you dont. Quality control never catches everything...

Well I have owned a PT 92, PT 99, 605, and my did has the revolver that is a .32 H&R magnum. We have had no problems.
I did have a mag not work right in my New PT92. I called them and they said send it to them and they would send me a new one. So we will see how long it takes, I mailed it Monday.

i have a pt140 millennium pro. it started getting unreliable after 400 rounds.
on the other hand, i've heard that their 1911 model is probably their best one yet. haven't really heard anything bad about that one.

It would seem the best designs of Taurus are not their own. PT92, Revolvers, 1911.

No problems so far.
But I've only put a few hundred
rounds through it so far.

I've only owned two Taurus's. Shot a PT-92 as well.
First was a Model 82 3" fixed sight .38 revolver. That one was a good gun, but the thing shot off to the side somewhat. Had to turn the barrel just a touch tighter to regulate the sights. A perfectly fine revolver otherwise.
The last one was a used(near new) PT-22 semi-auto. I had some jamming issues and a few light strikes with CCI ammo. The jams were caused by a combination of a sloppy mag fit. The magazine had a bunch of up and down play, my grip on the small gun held the mag up, and it needed to be completely down. If that makes sense to you. I made a thin spacer out of black plastic that filled the gap between the mag base and the mag well/end of grip, and the jamming issues dissappeared. Really not a bad little gun, however I can see how it could be frustrating if someone didn't figure that mag thing out.
I've fired a couple PT-92's and thought they were great pistols.
On the whole, I've been satisfied with my Taurus's. I don't think they are top quality guns, but not "Saturday night specials" either.
That said, I wouldn't go out of my way to buy one. Too many complaints from others about the guns and the customer service. Too many guns I desire more.

Had 7, now 0. Too many reliability problems, lack of fit and finish, and every issue seemed to repeat itself. Much happier now.

I have a Mil Pro PT 145 (3rd Gen), great gun, its my ccw. I have a SS PT1911 that will be here either today or tomorrow, I can't wait. In a pro-active move I have already ordered a new Wilson Combat thumb safey and new grips to replace factory as soon as I get it.

Let's see, my carry gun is a PT745 with several thousand rounds thru it. The wife carries a 650 with even more rounds thru it. I have a 650 that has a couple of thousand thru it but it gets neglected now. I had a PT145 that I abused heavily and never gave me problems. So yeah, I'm a fan.
I will say that I was looking at a 22 revolver that the cylinder would not lock up on with the hammer cocked. And that was a new gun, so apparently their QC guy naps sometimes.

I've got to share my experience with a PT1911AR (not stainless but close enough) - it was actually the cause for my first THR post:
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=367087&referrerid=70013
I couldn't be more unhappy with it. I've had it at a gunsmith for 6 weeks, completely gutting it and fitting all new internals. Plenty of people get them with great triggers and no problems - mine came from the factory broke - TWICE! and the trigger was terrible. It'll soon (hopefully) be back in my hands with all Ed Brown / Cylinder & Slide internals and finally be a decent gun, but for almost twice what I had intended to pay for it.
The long and short of my experience is that you may get a good one or you may get a terrible one, like I did. I bought it because I bought into the "it's a custom 1911 worth $2,000 in custom parts" and "it has a lifetime warranty" - but those "custom" parts are crude and crudly assembled, and the lifetime warranty is no good unless you plan to spend a lifetime (and a fortune in shipping costs to and from the factory!) getting it to run!
Here is the one good thing I would say for it. For $600, you get a 1911 in 45ACP with a rail, lowered / flared ejection port, beveled (nominally at least) mag well, checkered front strap / MSH, forward cocking serrations, throated barrel that has a good lockup and is decently accurate, Heine Slant-Pro Straight Eight sights (that don't quite fit the gun right but oh well) and a full-length guide rod.
Even if you throw EVERYTHING else away and buy $300 in new parts + $150-250 more for gunsmithing, that's still a pretty good deal.
But it'll always say Taurus on the side, and you'll never recover what you put into it back out if you ever sell it.
I dunno. Good luck... if I could go back, I'd have a Springfield Loaded right now and probably be a lot happier.

Here's my first hand experience.
1. PT 92 - Reliable function, marginal accuracy.
2. PT 111 - Was impressed by function, ergonomics, and performance.
3. 651 - Firing pin spring failed shortly after purchase and cylinder assembly fell of during a reload once. Performance is acceptable.
Just a note, these aren't all mine just the experience I've had.

My two M66s. I love these guns. The nickeled one is especially good, great trigger, 1" accuracy at 25 yards with magnums or .38 wadcutters, and was a great bargain. The 3" blued one is almost as accurate, bought it for the 3" barrel, it carries better IWB.

My M85SSUL. I like it so much for carry, I had the front sight improved. It's a great shootin' little .38. The DA is the best out of the box trigger I've ever felt on a gun except for, perhaps, a roommate's Python.

My first handgun was a Taurus PT-99 AFS. I had it for 15 years until I sold it this year. I never had a problem with it. I even experienced Taurus CS before I sold the pistol and I never had any problems with CS. Turnaround was as promised (six weeks).

If you do a search you will find enough reading to keep you up for a night or two regarding the Taurus - is it a good gun ? question.
As you can already see in this thread there are people who have had bad experiences with them, and others who have no complaints. Bottom line is a little hard to come to . I personaly have three revolvers and no complaints. My concealed carry is a Taurus so I guess you can say I am satisfied with them.
Many will say stick with S&W and perhaps if they make the gun you want and you can afford the S&W they might be right. I say might be because I have heard more than a couple sad stories about S&W quality as well. ( and seen a couple first hand) Those problems just don't seem to get as much play time as the Taurus ones do. Perhaps it is because there are less of them and perhaps there are other factors involves - hard to tell.
Most S&W revolvers I have owned were of 1970's vintage or older. Perhaps a couple of the L frames were bought in the early 80's. Never owned one that I didn't have apart, and these were generaly good quality guns. I've had my Taurus revolers apart as well and in general terms they are not fit as well as the older S&W guns. With that said, I have had a few more recent S&W guns apart as well, and I have to say they are not what they used to be either.
Some people are extremely picky as well, and some have trouble understanding certain differences and what they mean. An example of this is the complaints about the Taurus Model 94's (.22RF - 9 shot) having a terrible DA trigger pull. Well, put a 9 shot cylinder design into a S&W and you will have some of the same heavy trigger pull problems. The mechanics are not compatible to a light DA trigger on these guns.
I suspect that if you buy one, the odds are you will have a good performing firearm . That's again based on my opinion and experience with them, and others have apparently had less positve results.

I own two Taurus firearms and my son owns one. All three have not had any problems.
I do not remember the model of my son's, but it is a 4" stainless .357. I have a 3" stainless 85. Both are pre-lock models. I also have a PT-22.
I like Taurus guns and may buy another in the future.
I remember the ads that the gun mags ran a few years ago. They were full page ads and had a pic of a blued 85 laying on a table with a lamp, book, and a pipe, IIRC. That revolver with the walnut grips was a beauty to behold. At least to me. But, I never got a blued one.
