Interesting thing happened in class today...

Well, classes have started up again and it's back to school for me. I arrive at American History Since 1870, and as I take my seat I notice a sheet laid over something on the front desk. Class begins as it normally does with the roll call, distribution of the syllabus, etc. My prof introduces himself as a heavily Democratic W.A.S.P. (white Anglo-Saxon Protestant) and his following lectures reinforce this statement.

The lecture begins. America's socioeconomic status after the Civil War, western movement, and so forth. He begins to explain the whole idea behind "taking over the frontier", Manifest Destiny, and the whole time is standing behind the sheet-covered desk.

And he asks the question, "How would you defend yourself if you (and maybe your family) were out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by American Indians that want you gone?" Someone at the back ventures a "Get some weapons?" type of response, and with a flourish, he removes the sheet.

Laying on the table are a Colt SAA and Winchester Model 1873. Both are 100% original.

He proceeds to pick them up, give a small description of each, clear the chambers, and PASSES THEM AROUND THE CLASS. :what:

Needless to say, I didn't hear too much of the rest of the lecture;)

I wished stuff like this was more common, but still...wow.:D

He must not want to keep those grand old shooting irons, or he wouldn't support the Democratic (sic) party.

I can't believe he passed them around!!! :what:

No one hurt them, did they???:scrutiny:

What was his reason for bringing them in, being that he is a democrat?

Nah, no harm was done...he's a decent guy, always joking, but you could tell there was an icy undertone to his voice when he asked that nobody pull the trigger. As far as hi democratic views are concerned, it seems like he's more for things like closing poverty gaps, a "less nosy" foreign policy, and so forth.

How big was the class? Some of my lecture halls had 400 people in them.

We had an ATF guy come in with an MP5...didn't pass it around though he dressed up some girl with that, his armor, gas mask, etc...made her look kinda cute :p

How big was the class?
Around 20-30 (private college)...

If the ATF showed up here and tried that, it'd be interesting since OCU's biggest department is the Dance program. Not many of those girls are above 105 lbs:uhoh:

I also like that he "showed clear" on them.

Did anyone gasp when he revealed the weapons?

I just have this funny picture of some startled leftist student hauling a** out into the hall screaming "Gunnnnnnnn!".

I guess that's not really funny in this day and age but its what popped into my twisted mind.

Second thing that I thought of was the college history Professor who kept an old Civil War rifle in his office and the stink that erupted over that.

Anything that pisses off or especially, scares a liberal, is worth owning, doing, or saying.

Were you that late, or is it just a long class?

What an interesting way to open class. So does your school allow firearms on campus? :) (thinking CCW here...)

For a public speaking class about a year ago I demonstrated how to field-strip, clean and properly operate an AK-47, with my real SAR-1 rifle. I wore a furry Russian military cap, explained the history behind the rifle and it modern proliferation.

I got some dirty looks from the liberals in the class, and an A from the professor.

So does your school allow firearms on campus? If they are 100% original, I believe any firearm manufactured before 1899 is considered an "antique", not a firearm. So technically, they wouldn't be firearms on campus... Way to grab the attention of the class, though!

we had first day of class and my profs expertese is firearms policy. so when we were going around telling of out favorite past times. i said guns. and the whole class just gasped. he just smi.ed and said nice. then we started talking about suicide assistants (jack kavorkian stuff) and if it was right. and this one girl says that no one ever has the right to kill some one. so i quickly respond with, if someone is in my house endangering me or my family you can garuntee that i have and undoubtedly will use my right and remove that person from living.

the professor giggled and smiled and said he expected that would be coming from me.:D

We have several members who are at the local state college. THey keep their views to themselves, until they are tenured:banghead:

I got a kick out of it one time when two of them met at the range, and had no idea that each were shooters.

Sounds like a good prof.:D

Oddly enough I am reading this thread in my school's computer lab. Where I just had adiscussion with the gentleman accross the way from me about shooting at the local range. (I was showing off my best group from this morning.)

Congrats on the great teacher. There aren't a lot like him out there.

I guess there wouldn't be any gun-fearing leftists in that class, since to them REAL American history begins on or about 1970......buncha hippies!:D

In about 3rd grade we took a field trip to a state park and some of my classmates got to shoot off some flintlocks. And they had a shooting range in my middle school that was also a class room but the range was only for ROTC. About the only thing I've ever heard that was remotely anti gun was when we "learned" violence never solves anything in American history class:rolleyes:

My eighth grade history teacher did something similar.
During the F&I war lessons, he had two re-enactors he knew come in. They were dressed in full period dress, complete with weapons. One had a PA rifle and the other had a Brown Bess.
Our teacher brought a Brown Bess in again during the Revolutionary War lessons. He also brought in a Henry, a Spencer, and a '51 Colt Navy for the Civil War lessons.
For the rest of High School, history was still my favorite subject.

One of my good friends is a history professor at a smallish college. He's a Veitnam veteran, 2 tours, USMC Gunnery Sgt. Written several books and they have been published and gone through multiple printings. During his Texas history classes ( I took them during the late 80's-early 90's period) he brought in a Brown Bess, Missisippi rifles, a Trapdoor, and several of his collection of revolvers. He collects firearms which he has documented as belonging to the famous and infamous of Texas and western United States history. He and I have sat in his office many afternoons over an old Colt or S&W talking about his latest research or acquisition. One of the most impressive stories is that of his purchase from the family of General John Bell Hood of the Generals' saber and personal shotgun.

Oh, by the way, his classes always make and are always overflow.

Regards,
Rabbit.
