My theory is, that plane's been there for a while. The hunter just decided to go out there for thrills or some other reason.

Firing a messenger line to shore so that he can haul back a heavier rope.

Deductions
The plane is not on floats, but on skis or wheels. Floats float. Even damaged floats are designed to float, and the wing damage is not consistent with the level of destruction needed to destroy the floats entirely or rip them off.
The fellow on top appears to have a Wild West style guide gun with a scout scope. Maybe a Co-Pilot? He has ear protection, and appears to have waders on but no sort of dry suit. He has a buddy on shore. My guess is there's a small boat behind the bent wing he used to get out there, getting his pants wet in the process but not swimming.
Why is he out there? Odd. Maybe he is shooting a line. I see some sort of line trailing next to him. Maybe he's the owner or adjuster from the insurer, out to reclaim the hull.

are we sure that that "line" is not an antenna aerial??
just presenting possibility, not sayinmg it's NOT a line it just seems that it could be simply a slim radio aerial, partly b/c the tip of it seems to be sticking out ABOVE the gun.

There is a float there (right hand side) and the wingtip on the left of the picture looks like it hit something.
Something looks wrong about the guy, there is no shadow and he looks a bit wrong. A photoshop job?

Hmm.......Looks like a C-180 or 185, tail number U-571.
Lemme guess, the body of water is his winter airstrip, and breakup came early this year turning it into the yellow submarine and the wing damage is a result of getting slammed on the ice that was still solid when it broke through.
I bet it wasn't a landing either. It was parked and unattended when it broke through the ice. Note the lack of damage on the prop. Hydraulic pressure from a spinning prop hitting the water suddenly would pull the blades forward. An impact from an unplanned landing with engine off would likely have curled the blades into another position. Plus the blade isn't feathered indicating an in-flight engine failure and emergency proceedure by the pilot.

Wild, I suppose you are too young to remember an Anchorage band back in the 70s that was called Dr Schultz ????
They did a song called "Cover of the Field & Stream" (same tune and idea as "...Rolling Stone"). One of the lines went "gonna hang moose antlers on my Cessna ..."

OK..its rahter innocuous...as I am told....
the guy on the plane is an ace plane rebuilder and mechanic. Evidently the planes owner was out practicing some lake landings when he had some type of problem causing a bit of submarining...
While attempting to salvage the plane, some large thig was nosing around in the area so out came the rifle to scare it off..
Or so I am told....

Is that a rifle? Looked like a marine magnum type shotgun.
There's someone on shore, he doesn't appear as worried as the shooter.
You have crocs' up there in Alaska? ;)
