Would it be stupid to try and hunt east Texas hogs with a Remington 1858 .44?

Depends on how good of a shot you are, and what Texas laws on hunting are.

In that part of Texas hogs are pests, and do not fall under hunting regulations as I understand it. I was just wondering If it was enough gun or if I was putting myself in danger using such a primitive weapon.

I would say it is possible, I have seen my buddy take wild hogs (also in Texas) with a 22 at close range, so I am sure that the Remmington 58 could do it too. If you do try it just carry another modern firearm just in case your aim isn't good enough or if the round dosen't do it's job, Let me know how it goes when you go, I was thinking of using a colt army for the same thing.

In Texas you can hunt hogs with any round.

I think I'd wanna have a good tree close to me, just in case. A.44 will definitely cause a big hog to die, but he might be PO'd at you before he does finally expire.
Load it full with Triple 7FFFg to get the most velocity you can.

No, but would probly carry another one in another holster, and an 1863 Remington 1863 Zouave .58 500gr minnie.

I've got an associate that uses a pair of Walkers to hunt hogs from the saddle. That seems to do the job, although I've heard that she's getting bored with that approach. Last I've heard, she's in the market for a pack of dogs and a boar spear.

I went on a hog hunt last year , main stage was my 45/70 single shot rifle B/P .405 gr bullet 65 grs of Goex 3F..the folks said bring the biggest gun ya own ..I wore my 1858 Remington as a side arm . Like you I was wanting a shot with the Remington pretty bad ..I knew from my pratice I would need a shoot no more than 35 yards away ..I couldn`t get that shot from the stand ...I was hunting alone , the guides were with the other hunters , I chose to hunt alone , so they left me with a walkie talkie . I could hear a pack of hogs on the other side of a ridge infront of me , so I slipped closer to the base of the ridge pistol drawn ..I could hear the hogs comming over the ridge as soon as I found a large tree to lean the rifle against ....Well there were 5 hogs running together and they made a bee line straight for you know who ..It made the little hairs on the back of my neck stick straight out ! So I holstered the Remington as fast as I could ...grabbed the 45/70 and dropped the lead hog , when the smoke cleared the lead hog was on his back feet kicking the air and the others had ran back over the ridge .
Latter that day , talking to the guides they told me they had some stands just for bow hunters , that I could get into pistol range in ....The stands were 10 ft off the ground ..a nice safe place ..

Yep Reddbecca indeed it is ...I took the peep sights off and installed a good set of open sights with a wide blade front ..much easyer to see in the dark thick woods . I would have gotten ate , if I would have left the peeps on ...LOL I`ve sence gotten a ladder rear for it , but I haven`t had a chance to get it dovetailed in .
