I had some trouble acquiring myself a new state driver's license, but I finally got it and finally got to buy my first shotgun. So yesterday I headed down to Cabela's and picked up an 870 express with a 28" barrel. Also grabbed an 18" police barrel so I could use the gun for hunting/skeet and HD all in one :D
Anyway, got to take it to the "range" today (barrels in a field by my buddy's house, ha) and he lent me an old box of 7 1/2 shells. Gun feels great! At 25 yards with the 7 1/2 and borechoke 18 barrel I had a spread of about 2 feet. Haven't yet tried out with the 28 inch, but I'm sure it will be much tighter and a whole lot of fun. Thanks to everyone here for the knowledge and can't wait to send some more rounds downrange this weekend!

Congrats on the 870!
I think the 28" will be tighter if there's a tighter choke.
I see most people using the same long barrel for skeet. However, an 18" barrel doesn't sound like a bad idea actually. I think I'll try it out.

Omigod! There's something leaking out of your ears! Must have been from that awe-inspiring 12ga recoil. :)
I kid, of course. I have rather many silly bones in my body. At any rate, congrats on the acquisition, and enjoy! :D

a lot of skeet shooters use 28 and longer barrels...an 18 inch barrel might be found to be too whippy for crossers.....FWIW, YMMV

Oneounce, you might have to help me out with those acronyms.
Edit: I only plan on using the 28 for hunting and skeet. The 18 I'll slap on when I'm back home.

Congrats on your fine new shotgun. A couple things...
Your longer barrel almost certainly has a Modified choke installed. You should consider getting a Full and an IC tube. These three tubes will cover just about everything.
Remember that 870s need regular exercise. And that while they do not breed, they tend to multiply.
Enjoy....

Congrats +1 on the new 870. Next, get some tactical reduced recoil slugs and buck and try 'er out. You are going to like the results!
