View Full Version : The Perfect gun.

There is no question that everyones idea of the perfect gun is different. we all have different needs and builds. Small hand, large hands, etc.
But have any of you ever found "the perfect Gun"? I have owned most major handguns, 1911s, Glock, Sig, H&K, Styer, bunch of revolvers, etc. However last week I picked up a M&P full sized in 45. At first it seemed way to big for my hand but then they showed me that it had the large back-strap on it and we switched it out for a smaller one. It was like an extension of my hand.
Today I went sold my G17 and picked up a Full Sized M&P in 9mm. I plan on going and getting a Compact next. Probably also in 9mm.
I think the only Non M&P semi Auto I am going to get anytime soon is an XDm
In other words I have found my perfect gun. It fits my hand perfectly, it looks good, it is reliable and shoots near perfect for me.
So tell me what gun have you found that fits you perfectly, or are you still searching for it? Have you ever had that moment when a Gun just seems perfect!

I'd like to see a semi auto pistol with:
Steel frame
Rotating barrel lockup
Single action
Striker fired
Frame mounted safety
Double stacked magazine
Slender grip
Mostly not for any definable reasons, but just to meet my own ideals for an elegant pistol design.

The .357 Speed Six is about ideal for my needs. I haven't found a better all-around handgun yet.

Partial to Colt's and Beretta's in semi auto's, S&W's seem to be the revolver's, (except for the Diamondback 38).
Don't know about the perfect part though, I shoot well enough to pick up anything and make it work for me. My Beretta 87 .22 seems to be more enjoyable, low recoil, accurate, inexpensive ammo.

Much to my own surprise: STI VIP. It did / does everything so well that I haven't felt an urge to add another semi-auto to the accumulation.
Of course, this has allowed me to dabble in revolvers so I'm not saving any money - it's just going elsewhere.
The STI has been so perfect, in my limited, narrowly focused, world that I don't even feel a need to defend the thing when it's attacked on all sides. No mean accomplishment for a mutant 1911 with 60.00 widebody magazines, a non-traditional guide rod, a takedown gizmo, polymer lower end, barrel under 4" in length and a plain as a mud-rail fence matt black finish. It has, in short, cured me of "confirmation bias" - an affliction I may not have suffered from anyway, but being totally immune never hurts.
If I ever find the revolver equivalent I'll probably find another hobby altogether.

I absolutely love my CZ 75. I have yet to fire a gun I like more. Some have come close (H&K P7, S&W Model 10 4" Heavy BBl, XD), but I can't imagine a better gun. The only down side is that it's heavy for CCW (all steel).

My perfect pistol is my Norinco Tok that I modified to chamber the 9x23 Winchester round.
I have extremely tiny hands, and I like the more powerful cartridges. I can't shoot any full sized double action handguns. I even had a problem with the 1911. This is thin enough for me to get a good grip, and it has the power of the 357 Magnum.

I don't know if it is my "perfect gun" but the first handgun I bought was a stainless Ruger Security Six in .357 magnum caliber. I bought it in 1976. It was all I had for a good many of the young, lean years. I fired many, many factory .38 and .357 rounds. I started reloading for it with the old Lee Loader tool. It took a bunch of work and time to load 50 rounds that way. I got very good with it and learned to shoot double action. When I went on the first PD I was with, in 1979, I qualified with the M10 quite easily. It was the gun I learned on and I still have it. It wasn't the most expensive revolver that I could have found but it was the best I could afford. I have had hundreds of guns since and have really never found anything that would do more for what I need than the old Ruger. If I had to go back to only one, that would be it. So, I guess for me, it is the "perfect gun"

The .357 Speed Six is about ideal for my needs. I haven't found a better all-around handgun yet.
I have two K-frame .357s and a 4" Security-Six, but a short barrelled Speed Six has always really appealed to me as an ideal all-around utility and defense handgun. I wish I could find one.

Ain't no such thing... I have had Glock, S&Ws, Kimbers, Keltecs, and Charters, among them all. My current 'perfect' is a Walther PPS. The most perfect piece I ever had (and let it get away) was a Colt Python 4" made in 1972. Still get angry over that loss... What a doofus!
Look at it this way - "Perfection is attained by slow degrees; it requires the hand of time" (Voltaire). Enjoy the time...

No kidding. I snatched mine for $200 a few years ago after talking the guy *up* from $150. Now some of the rarer variants are listed on GB for over a grand. People do not part with a Speed Six easily ;-)

All of my guns are perfect for their application, at least in my mind. But perfect is a highly subjective term. One man's "perfect" is another man's "loser."

I don't know. Tough question, really. I have been leaning toward stainless guns recently. To add to the Speed Six discussion just above, I recently picked up a Speed Six .38 for about $250. And I've got to say, this gun has grown on me to the point where I fondle it more than my Colts. :uhoh: Not sure what it is. I guess the grips just feel more solid. It shoots great too. If you find a good deal on a Speed Six, don't pass it up! I'm on the hunt for one chambered in 9mm Parabellum now... sorry guys, had to post a pic. Didn't mean to threadjack... although I guess I could use the excuse that this gun is 'perfect.' ;)

I'm both blessed and cursed with very small hands, so any small auto works remarkably well for me. I have a PPK that I love, and I had a very positive experience with a Guardian recently, so that's probably my next perfect gun. On the same day I shot the Guardian I fired a buddy's Smith and Wesson 29 classic in .44 magnum and yeah...didn't go so well. However, for someone else, that's probably the perfect gun.

Congratulations on finding your perfect gun. So far, mine is a stainless S&W 457, .45acp. I've heard many good things about the M&P and hope to try one out some day.

For me, when I sat down and drew up the specs for a new main carry, Which was; 45acp, at least 10 round mag, no safety to engage, reliable and small enough to carry anytime, there was only one answer............Glock 30.
So for me, this was and is the most perfect gun there is.
However, at the time I did not like Glocks. When I wrote down what I wanted I said to myself, I can't believe the only gun I could think of to match these specs was a glock!
But like I said, for me it's the perfect gun. Although, I have many others to choose from in my safe, to me the Glock is the most perfect one in it.

I have developed a fondness for 3" barrel .357's and as such own a 3" S&W 65that is as close to perfect in a revolver as I think I am going to find. I also have a 3" Ruger GP100 (short shroud) that is right up there with the 65. I own and have owned several different makes and types of pistols and I think I have found what might be the perfect one but I don't own it yet and that is the CZ PCR. I picked one up in a gun store a few months back and I have to say it felt better in my hand than any other pistol I have looked at.

I have one too and it is pretty darned perfect, but the 2 3/4" Ruger Speed Six still appeals to me and I want one. I like its shrouded ejector rod and rounded edges, and it may be a little more rugged than the Smith.

The S&W 65 I have is the Ladysmith version with the full ejector shroud. I polished it up so it is now a "mansmith". I actually didn't like the bead blasted finish and I put a set of Pachmayr Compac Professional grips on it.

either an "n" or "k" frame smith and wesson with houge grips, and a 4-6.5 inch barrel. Believe it or not, caliber is not so relevant. I like 357 and 44 mag for their versatility, though. ALso, stainless if you please. I actually USE my guns, so blued is not the best choice for me.

Perfect weapon....um that would be the M1 Garand...eh?
I must agree with a couple of previous posters reference the Speed Six...definitely the perfect carry revolver.
Well...then Ruger went one better and created the GP100 in 3 inch barrel. A little gunsmithing and I give you...the ultimate side arm:

I have two.
The first one was a Smith and Wesson model 19 4" 357. I didn't think I'd ever find a gun I'd like shooting more.
Until I shot my first 1911, a Colt 1991. Instantly, I became a 1911 guy.

MikeJ,
Yeah, I like the looks of that Ladysmith but I've never held one. BTW, I've also wanted for a long time a 3" GP100 like yours. To me, 3 inches seems just about perfect for a revolver.

I love my 9mm Hi-power. I've been sooting it almost as long as I have 1911's (about 30 yrs now). When not limited to ball ammo I prefer the 9mm. If I could get a HP with an accessory rail in front of the trigger guard I think it would be my perfect handgun. I'd like the ability to clip a light on at night for answering those "something went bump in the night" calls. It would be nice to have a hand free for doors instead of holding the flashlight. Other than that it suits me.

The perfect gun is the one you happen to have within reach at the moment when a desperate need for it arises.

July 25, 2008, 10:54 AM
For me, it is a 4" stainless GP100. I can't imagine a better gun. I've tried similar revolvers from Smith and Wesson, but I prefer the Ruger.
For autoloaders, it is not clear-cut for me. That is probably why I've waffled so much and haven't purchased any, yet.
After shooting about 20 different autoloaders, my candidates are the following:
CZ 75 B
Springfield XD-M (wish this was offered in 9mm - some might argue that the gun is too big for 9mm, but I disagree. I'm not a big 40 S&W guy)
Springfield XD9 service
Don't get me wrong, I like Sigs, HKs, Berettas, and Glocks as well, but these guns just work better for me.
What is funny is that I've actually shot an SR9 better than the CZ 75 B, but I think that it was a fluke. I just don't think that Ruger is a real "player" in the autoloader market. Maybe the SR9 changed that. Maybe in a few years I'll consider getting one, but I still don't trust the gun, yet. I have to admit that the SR9 fit me better than any other autoloader that I've ever held. I like the thin grips.
This short list is based on personal fit, durability, reliability, and accuracy.

I vote for the M1911. I've carried one for over 40 years. When you team it with a .22 conversion kit, you have all you need in the way of handguns.
(Of course, guns aren't about need, they're about want. So I have other .22s, a Colt DS in .38 Special, a couple more Colts in .357, and a Colt and two Rugers in .45 Colt.)

Colt Peacekeeper, which is a version of the Colt Trooper MK 5. Ugly, thick blued but unpolished finish that is impervious to rain, mud or much of anything else. Night sites and Pachmayr grips. Extremely accurate. Anything out to 100 yards is going to get hit, and out to 200 yards is probably going to get hit or go for cover. I've owned (and carried) it for 23 years now.

My Kimber Eclipse Pro II is my perfect handgun. The only negative is the takedown. A close second would be my M&P 9MM. For revolvers nothing beats my S&W 386 SS/SC.

My 4" adj. sighted GP-100 with a factory fixed sight grip. This gun fits me like it was made for me and the balance is perfect for me. I've never had a gun that fit me better.
I'm more accurate with my Glock but the feel is no where near the GP.

The perfect handgun for me would have, more or less, these characteristics:
-it must to be a revolver, or a single-shot pistol;
-single action;
-big caliber, with high energy and stopping power;
-as strong as let me shot any kind of reload I want;
-as accurate as let me do the "one hole shot", if I would be able to do it (and I'm not :) );
-well made (good steel, good finish, etc.);
-steel made only.
Among these I've shot with, that's, or rathe these closer to my ideal handgun are Freedom Arms .454 Casull above all, then Gary Reeder custom (based on Ruger frame) .500 Linebaugh and Tanfoglio Raptor .45-70. ... I'm waiting the BFR, that according to I've heard and seen by the moltitude, could come up to my perfect handgun.
P.S. You can doubtless understand, partners, that the gun I've described is not too much "practical", but all that I pretend from my gun is that I could enjoy myself with it. I use all my guns only for that, not for self-defence, therefore I don't need high fire speed, great rounds capacity, polimeric made, lighter weight, etc. Am I explain? ;)

S&W 65 round grip with the following mods
4" pencil barrel
Moonclipped
gold bead front sight dovetailed in.
Target trigger
Target hammer
Mine just needs the gold bead dovetailed front sight.

The only thing better would be a S&W 581 that would be round gripped, moonclipped, and the barrel shortened to 3.5 and delugged to look like a S&W M&P or 58, dovetailed gold bead front, medium width target hammer.

I saw the perfect gun once.
It was on Judge Dredd the movie.
Came with a grenade launcher, net thrower, full auto/burst, flamethrower, and DNA recognition on the grips and if someone without your DNA tried to hold the gun, it would explode.
