Lars on how guns can stay out of kids hands
The shooting of Sergeant Damon Coates is the subject of Larson’s commentary.
Larson addresses the issue of teens who somehow get their hands on guns and offers some of his contradictions and common sense.
The fact that Clackamas County Sheriff's Sergeant Damon Coates who was critically wounded in a shooting incident last night, is fighting for his life is contradiction enough.
But there are a few other things we should consider.
First, the incident itself, the 15 year old who shot Sergeant Coates was in possession of a gun.
That's a contradiction. Despite all the laws on the books and years of school shootings we still haven't figured out how to keep guns away from kids.
Second, its not legal for anyone to supply a teenager with a gun, we have laws about that, the contradiction is that those laws often go unenforced.
Some common sense solutions:
We need to find a way to get kids who see their friends with guns to tell somebody responsible.
Local police agencies could offer safe, short term storage of firearms for families going through some kind crisis, like domestic violence, a suicidal family member or the like.
The new sheriff of Multnomah County said it is an idea that wouldn't take much in the way of new resources, and he would consider the idea.
With Contradictions and Common Sense, I'm Lars Larson
