How many of you prefer Revolvers to Semi Autos or vise versa? Add why.

I could not vote. I love both and for different reasons.

I will start. I prefer revolvers because, I am more accurate with a revolver than any semi that I have ever shot. I can make better follow up shots with the revolver. I also like the simplicity of the revolver.

Semis.

Even the revolver I own is semi-auto.

My first handgun was a revolver -- a S&W 640. I liked the simplicity, the DAO trigger (which meant it was pretty unlikely anything could snag the trigger and set it off), and the reliability (revolvers have much less about them than can cause them to fail to go BANG when you pull the trigger). I also liked the size -- I can carry it in my pocket.

I don't like the capacity -- 5 shots, but realistically, most SD shootings involve 3 or fewer shots, IIRC.

My second weapon was a Glock 30. Double the capacity, and a larger bullet. Plus, I find it easier to hit with the Glock.

I have more Revolvers, but I carry a semi-auto.

I voted semi auto because I shoot them faster with more accuracy than I shoot revolvers. They also reload faster, carry more rounds, and have less recoil in a similar weight gun. Modern semi-auto's are also much easier to clean.

I do like revolvers, and a lightweight J-frame makes the perfect BUG and pocket gun, but I just don't enjoy taking them to the range as much as semi auto's.

Revolvers for their simplicity. I can pick any of mine up and automatically shoot them after months of not using them. I don't have to "think" about how to use them. To me the only purpose of a pistol is to tide me over til I can get to a shotgun or a rifle.

Shoot my revolvers far more often for two reasons:

1) I don't have to crawl on the ground, on my hands and knees, picking up cases.

2) It takes me twice as long to clean up an autopistol as a revolver.

Only a couple of my autopistols are as accurate as my average revolver. And I had to spend $$$$ to make them as accurate as a stock box $$ revolver.

1) I don't have to crawl on the ground, on my hands and knees, picking up cases.

I'll second that. I really hate leaving brass behind, and hate crawling about to search for it. I don't even like to leave my .22 about, but I've mostly gotten over that. Mostly.

Plus, I just think revolvers are neat. They make for a petty enjoyable shooting experience, and if I actually enjoy my practice sessions, I'm bound to keep up with them.
I do have a hankerin for a 9mm and a GI 1911, though. Guess I'll just have to run Wolf, Blazer, or some other such stuff through them. :p

I think that a revolver is a good self defense gun for 75% of users who are more in the line of putting a gun in a desk and not picking it up for two years. Autoloaders require more training to think about clearing jams and such, while a revolver you just pull the trigger agian.

Prefer semi-autos, but have been known to carry revolvers from time-to-time.

I only own 3 semi autos, but at least triple that number of revolvers.

I tend to shoot a little better with wheelguns, but I prefer semis for most carry situations becaues of their capacity and ergonomics.

I prefer shooting semi-autos but my carry gun will be a revolver because that's where I found the best combination of physical size and fit in my hand.

I didn't vote either. If the poll said:

"Which do you prefer for home defense?"

or "Which do you prefer for hunting?"

or "Which do you prefer for concealed carry?"

or "Which do you prefer for ..."

then I would be able to vote.

As it is, the poll doesn't appear to be very helpful.

Is this a trick question?

Seems like a trick question too me! :scrutiny:

Anyway, I didn't vote, because there is no "I prefer both" for different reasons, and different uses.

I'm split ~50/50 between the number of revolvers and auto's I own. I carry a revolver ~75% of the time though.

As to why...I shoot my revolvers better. Therfore I carry what shoot the best!

C/O
July 24, 2008, 03:13 PM
Nope, no trick.

I have owned several semi autos over the years, but never could shoot them as well as I could a revolver. I just sold a Glock 19 to finance a Ruger SP101 that will be my primary CCW with my LCP as my BG or when the SP can't be carried.

The SP will be my main HD until I can get a shotgun.

So I was just wondering if other people liked wheelies more than semiautos.

That's like asking whether you like cake or pie. I like both and each has their use. I usually carry an auto but will sometimes carry a revolver. When hunting I usually have a revolver but may carry an auto. No clear answer for me.

No way, cake is 3.4 million times better than pie. A turkey potpie is about the only acceptable form of pie I can think of, maybe shepherds pie occasionally, whereas cake actually has many tasty permutations.

Course, I typically hate the frosting, so what do I know?

Revolver all the way. I do like 1911's, but always return to a revolver. Ultimate simplicity...point click bang...repeat as needed.

July 24, 2008, 04:25 PM
I prefer revolvers, but no by much. The autos I have are all very good handguns and they're as accurate as I can shoot 'em.

I just like to fire my DA revolvers single action, though. Seems like I can do a better job on targets at ranges over 25 yards.

don't we have this poll every few months? i guess at least this time it was posted in hanguns - general. it's funnier when they post it either in the revolver or semi-auto forums. results are quite predictable when posted in one forum or the other...

I have a slight preference for revolvers, as I generally shoot them better. And I'm lazy at heart, so I don't care for chasing brass.

July 24, 2008, 05:35 PM
Shoot both with about the same amount of success but chose pistol because for carry purposes it will give me faster reloads, more rounds available if needed. When I hunt it is with revolvers because I need the power. (unless its squirrel hunting then its 22 pistol)

I prefer revolvers. Always have.

Have obtained several semi-autos in the last few years, though. Am seriously considering changing to a semi-auto carry.

If I was awake and alert, I'd go semi-auto. I just got a 9MM Star that holds 16 rounds. I have a revolver by the bed, though. I can hit a target in the dark without thinking with that old S&W .38.

How about asking if I still beat my wife.
Yours is a question that cannot be answered. I own 6 revolvers, each with its own value, use and particular reason for living in my safe. I own 8autoloaders each of these with its own value, use and particular reason for living in my safe. All are used, cared for and appreciated. One type is not viewed as being more valuable or useful than the other. If it came down to the last two to go, one would be an autoloader, the other a revolver.
Still a tie at the end.

I like both, but if I could only have my Smith 65 or SA 1911, I'm taking the 1911.

If I am going to be out in crap weather, I will take the Smith, as it is stainless.

I prefer revolvers for the following reasons;

1) Generally much more accurate.

2) Generally much more reliable.

3) Generally much more powerfull

4) I shoot them better, either in a target situation, or in point and shoot.

5) They are readily adaptable to different ammo types, ie 38 wadcutters or
full house .357 loads

6) I prefer inside the waist band or pancake holsters. Both of these types
actually stabilize better with a 4-6 inch barrel.

7) Statistics show that in the average gunfight, less than 3 shots are
EXCHANGED.

8) Grips are almot infinenitely adjustable.

9) Give you the option to use rubber, plastic, or wax bullets. Learning to
engage arial targets is great practice for moving targets. You can also
practice draw and fire drills in your basement or garage this way.

10) With moon clips, a revolver is faster to reload thant a semi.

I always have a loaded magazine in my XD and a round in the chamber. No thumb safety to disengage on the XD.

I just point, click, bang and repeat as needed. I also have the added bonus of being able to repeat more than twice as many times as a revolver, before having to reload. Ultimate simplicity. ;)

I own both, and I shoot both regularly. I even carry both for protection (though not usually at the same time :))

But I prefer semiautos. I struggled for quite awhile to get really proficient with the DA trigger on my snubbie. Finally "got it" when I got a 66-3 that had had the trigger smoothed out which helped my technique, which in turn enabled me to shoot the snubbie better.

But I have only ever had to really struggle with one semiauto, and that's my husband's full size Springfield GI. It's just a shade too big in the grip and it's a shade too heavy and those make for less than acceptable results.

1) I don't have to crawl on the ground, on my hands and knees, picking up cases.

Ditto. Definitely prefer wheelguns for other reasons as well, that have been covered in other threads.

Always had revolvers and semis, until 6 months ago when I sold my last 1911,
a Series 80 Gold Cup. Shooting revolvers made me a better semi-auto shooter, and a better shooter overall. I also standardized caliber, .357 magnum, with exception of a .22 SW M-17 for cheap practice.

No regrets so far.

I like autoloaders well enough, but I shoot revolvers better. I like the ammo flexibility of magnum revolvers along with the accuracy, the reliability, the simplicity.

Autoloaders have better capacity and are quicker for most folks to reload. I own three revolvers and no autoloaders, yet.
