Rem. 870 PORTED OR NOT

I'm looking to purchase a new Remington 870 to use for home defense and possibly as a duty type weapon. My question is would the porting such as done by Vang Comp be alot more beneficial than just a regular police model 870. Anyone out there have experience with the Vang Comp system, likes or dislikes. The price is $540 vs. $1100 is it worth it. Any opinions greatly appreciated. Thanks, ShooterJD

If you REALLY feel the need to port the shotgun, you may simply send your barrel off to MagNaPort. They do an excellent job and use EDM machining. This basically microscopically machines the holes with absolutely no damage to the finish. A perfect cut every time. They are also very reasonable.

Hans and the gang do good work, and their customers sing praises. But, it's a limited gain for mucho dinero.
Vang barrels pattern tighter. This IS a very good thing.
The overbore and long cone, as well as that verdammdt porting, reduce the kick somewhat. Most folks would have to concentrate to feel the difference. It may be easier to tell with a good stopwatch.
Note that all this work is also done by other smiths for competition clay shotguns, parallel work for different disciplines.
As to whether the expense is worth it vs a pile of RR ammo and trigger time, I'd reserve a Vang job for when an equipment upgrade is the only possible way to improve performance.
Re porting, ported barrels are louder, have much more flash in low light, and sometimes spit detritus out all those little holes. Try as I might, I see little advantage in either reducing kick or muzzle rise.

Don't do it. Is being blinded in a firefight worth having lower recoil? It'll ruin your nightvision, and if you miss, and the attacker is armed, you're outta luck.

Porting is pretty obnoxious to those around the shooter.
Such as fellow shooters etc.

Don't know if I'd ever own one, but Hans Vang is the MAN in customized shotguns. I have trained next to people with Vang comped SGs and never noticed that much noise or distraction. But then there were usually several of us firing and moving in line, and we were never in total-dark conditions.
I have seen Vang-comped SGs make amazingly-small groupings on paper at 20 yards firing 00 buck. Then again, my friend's stock 1187 grouped almost as well firing Federal reduced 00.
You do know that you can get complete Vang-Comped Mossbergs (like the 590A1 Marine Magnum) for $545?
