Silly firearms comments - Survey

We all know that part of the job of defending our second amendment rights is educating the great unwashed public on what it's all about, and what the REAL facts are. Unfortunately, this sometimes involves having to correct firearms owners themselves about their lack of knowledge. I would be interested in having other THR members pass along their accounts (first-hand experience only) of nutty comments made in their presence by other gun owners. Here are my first two:
"You can't reload for automatics." This was the response given to me when I asked an attorney acquaintance why he wasn't policing the brass from his .32ACP Walther PP.
"It would blow out the windows!" Comment made to me by a convenience store clerk when he boasted of what would happen should he let a round off in his workplace from his oh so powerful .44 Magnum revolver. We didn't get into the OTHER things that would take place, were he to do this, barring robbery issues, naturally.
You just can't make this sort of stuff up!
FWIW,

"I've shot a Glock 7."
"Only the highly-trained, like the police, can carry guns."
"A longer barrel makes the gun more accurate."
"The recoil of a .44 magnum will knock you down."

"You can't take the mag disconnect out of a Browning, it's a complete interlock system." :scrutiny: -- idiot at the gunshop
"Yeah, but if you get a .45, that's one shot, one kill." -- a friend of mine scrutinizing me for planning the purchase of a 9mm
And I don't know if it's related, but it still pisses me off. "Now, what the hell do you need that for?" when it becomes known that I own a handgun. :fire:

Good points but we got folks right on this board that don't get it. Instead of leaving well enough alone, many times when a good general response is made to a generic question they chime in with "That's not right!" Blah blah yada yada. Seems like their self esteem (cough) needs boosting so they want to knock somebody else? :cuss:
If a person addressed me in person as I have been addressed many times on this anonymous board, I would hand him his :cuss: . And I'm sure there are many who feel the same way about this impertinent, infantile :cuss: . [/vent]

this is kinda of embarrasing......................
i thought a longer barrel did make it more accurate.........
my thought for this is. standard M-16 has a 20'' barrel
an M-4 has the shorter 16'' inch barrel
i can shoot the 300 meter targets easier with the 20'' barrel then i can with the M-4
please educate me on this cuz im really lost now
(no sarcasm im serious!)
PS if i screwed up an used the wrong ' instead of '' an said feet not inches just realize i meant inches an had a 50/50 chance!

Willyjixx: with iron sights a longer bbl has a longer sight radius on a traditional M16/ AR15 vs the 16 carbine flavored AR15. If you look how far apart the sights are you'll note you have a good 6" or so more sight radius even though the bbl is only 4" longer. So it is easier to shoot accurately if the sight radius is longer. If you are using a scope, all bets are off. HTH

One of the most common silly comments when the subject of military rifles and the M-16 comes up:
"the reason an M-16 is so lethal is because the bullets are tumbling when they come out of the muzzle of that rifle."

Person A: "I want a steel framed single action singlestack 1911 pattern pistol. I'm down to choosing either the Kimber Custom II or the Springfield Loaded. Which one should I get?"
Person B: "Get a Glock/Sig/HK/Beretta"
Me: "Hi, I came to fill out the paperwork for that Heckler & Koch USP 45 Compact Stainless I called about a few hours ago? And I'd like 3 spare magazines, please."
Clerk: "Man, take a look at this Glock 36. It's so much better than the HK. It won't snag on anything bla bla" and I tuned out for the rest of it. Finally got my HK.

"Don't buy one of those plastic guns. They are dangerous."
"Don't worry. It's not loaded."
"Don't buy that old gun. It won't ever be worth anything."

You just hit on one of my big fat pet peeves. I mean, I can see them giving you their opinion if you asked for it, but otherwise, their job is to do what you -- the customer -- want them to. :banghead:
I had one clerk looking down his nose at me because I have a 9mm. "I'll only shoot forty-five," he said, showing me that he plainly has more money than sense. So you can afford to spend twice what I can on ammo. Good for you. :scrutiny:

Longer barrels are more accurate for a variety of reasons.
The powder has a longer burn time and thus a faster muzzle velocity resulting in a flatter trajectory.
The distance between the sights reduces the amount of paralax, sometimes incorrectly referred to as "yaw", in the sight picture.
There is also the issue of bedding of the barrel, such as in the Mannlicher style of rifle, which increases accuracy.

"the reason an M-16 is so lethal is because the bullets are tumbling when they come out of the muzzle of that rifle."That comes from the fact that the core of the round is slightly offset from center. They mistakenly believe that this makes the round "tumble". What it actually does is to creat "yaw" (correctly used here) as the round strikes the target thereby causing the round to slew and do more damage. Perfectly Geneva Convention allowable.

"Holy Sh*t...Is that a Glock!?!?!....Oh man, I thought only cops could have them b/c you can sneak them on planes and through metal detectors!!"
"Holy Sh*t...Is that a Glock!?!?!...Oh Man, I thought only cops could have them b/c they have fingerprint resistant handles, and barrel rifling that stiffles ballistic match computers"
"Aren't those hollow point bullets illegal?"
"Do you have any of those crazy teflon coated bullets that slip through bullet-proof vests?"
"Don't get a Bushmaster w/ an A3 upper and removable iron sights...they are inheriently more inaccurate, and the sights flop around on the rails; you won't hit sh*t" (too bad i actually listened to this advise when i was wet behind the ears)

"The AK is completely inaccurate and so unreliable you can't fire a magazine without a jam. The only reason the gun is so popular is because it wasn't copyrighted so anyone can make one."
Paraphrased of course. This guy strikes me as being a sort of Counter-Strike kiddy, although most of his 'knowledge' came from Clancy novels and anecdotes.

When deputy Darrell Ford of the Monroe County Sheriff's Department asked my son, "What's that?" (As he pointed to my son's Glock 23 which was holstered on his side)
"If I were you, next time leave your weapon at home!", deputy Ford said to my son.
I've already posted the story of my son getting an apology from deputy Ford for his unlawful actions that day.
When I'm out and about in Monroe County, Kentucky and someone will ask, "Do you have a permit for that?" (I'm carrying a pistol in the open)
Or, "I didn't know it was 'legal' to carry a pistol in the open in this State!" Duhh, it's a right that is supposed to be protected by Kentucky's Bill of Rights! :banghead:

"I don't see why anyone needs a fully automatic weapon," said James Morrison, the owner of J.M. Gun Repair on Whitfield Park Drive in Manatee County. "Only the military and police should have access to those guns, not the general public."

A .45 will pick up a 200lb man 2ft in the air and throw him back 8 feet" This from a drill sargent at Ft. Knox. Ant then some comment that the new Barettas will do the same thing.

I’ve heard quite a few ignorant statements. Some of my favorite:
“A person getting hit by [insert your favorite high power round here] will get knocked off his feet!”
“The energy of recoil equals the kinetic energy of the bullet.”
“Hydrostatic shock is the primary killing mechanism when a person is struck by a bullet.”
“A handgun shouldn’t be aimed - it should be pointed.”
