The Ruger GP100 357mag. is an excellent revolver. I also like the Rossi 971 357 mag. ;)

The Ruger GP100 is definitely a good revolver. If you would tell us what purpose you have in mind for it, that would make it much easier to offer suggestions. Mike

Not the smoothest of actions but certainly the strongest & most reliable.

I lean heavily toward S&W. Rugers may be STRONG but they are UGLY, but I want a SP101 3" in 357 someday.
Taurus has a very diverse line and I have a Tracker in 45 colt that is a great gun.
I prefer the lines and asthetics of the S&W K frame of which the Mod 13 is my favorite and I greatly desire a 1905 4th change.
Some day I would like a Old model Ruger 357 "Flattop" and a convertable Blackhawk in 45 Colt/ACP
A "Holy Grail" would be a S&W Mod 58 converted to 45 Colt and round butted.

Hmmm, I have an article about a .45 Colt conversion of an N frame from American Handgunner somewhere. It does look really nice. :D
Redhawks are pretty good revolvers, and the GP's aren't bad either. But for a GREAT revolver, I want a S&W. :)

Define your intended uses please. That would help considerably, but you have already picked a good revolver.

Greeting's All-
My recommendation for a good all purpose type
revolver would be a 4" barrel Smith & Wesson model
19 .357 magnum. You should be able to locate one
in LNIB condition at a fairly attractive price!:uhoh: :D

A good revolver behaves itself and comes to dinner when called.
I like the N-Frame S&W's.

For a first revolover that you can pretty much do anything with and shoot whatever you want as much as you want, it really boils down to a choice between a S&W L-frame or a Ruger GP-100. Pick the one that suits you best with either a 4" or 6" barrel.

Many will point to the various Smiths and Rugers and rightly so, but don't rule out some of the Colts (Troopers, King Cobras, Pythons) or the Dan Wessons.

The GP-100 will do you a fine job. John K at www.handloads.com uses one. Ask him. I personally use a M-19 S&W but really want a Blackhawk.

For Target 357, I would go with a 6" Smith Model 19/66 or the L-Frame 586/686.

Depending on how serious you become about "target", a 6" Smith or good Dan Wesson should always work well. A lot of people liked Pythons back when too. I've had lots of fun with an old 2 3/4" Ruger Speed Six, but that isn't really serious "target" work. I really think all quality revolvers have about the same accuracy, but some are definitely easier to do well with.
