They use to show us a film clip with the Sig 550 lined up on the railing of a mountain house. Iced over, the soldiers would exit the hut, grab their rifles, clear the ice and begin shooting.

What type action does this rifle use? Is it derived from the Kalishnikov or H&K designs, or a wholly different concept?

It's a modified AK action, but the return spring is wrapped around the piston. It uses the upper/lower receiver concept of the M-16 and FNC rifles. I believe it also has a bolt hold opener. Truely the best combination of all the best features.

Unless I'm mistaken I believe it's fairly it's a Kalashnikov-style action, with a couple small differences... Main one being the recoil spring is up on the gas piston instead of behind the bolt carrier. Everything I've heard about the Sigs has them pegged as quite possibly the finest AW in the world. Sure would like to try one out myself (in an affordable fashion)... Maybe after the AWB sunsets...

{Edit} Doh, instaposted...

AWB has nothing to do with the availability of Sig 550/551 rifles ... its the import ban (which will still be in place after the AWB sunset).

After we make sure the AWB sunsets we need to focus our attention on repealing the import ban.

I'd kiss Hilary for a SiG 551.

Owning one would make me so much more dangerous than I am with an AR-15 though, so I understand why I can't have one :cuss:

Good lord, don't go letting out that the Sig 550 is a tough, reliable action! The AR gods will strike you down!

Every time I've claimed the Stgw90 is one of the best AW's there is, someone screams how it's not proven in combat, blah blah blah. The Swiss test their gear like no one else on earth. Think about it - that's all they have to do with their time....prepare!

What haven't the Swiss made that is the upper echelon of precision and reliability, for pete's sake? All of us that own a K-31 can attest to their weaponmaking skills.

Very interesting.

Only question I have is the high temperature requirement. 600°C/12hrs?! That seems a bit high. I sure would have like to have seen the mags and the gun afte they pulled them out of the furnace. I don't know of any commercial synthetic polymer that can handle that. I wonder what they use for the stock, grip, and mags.

Maybe it was just a typo of 60°C (~140°F) typed in as 600C (~1112°F).

What we really need is a domestic Sig plant that can start kicking out the rifles. Import ban could be damned then provided the AW ban sunsets.

HK is supposedly going to build a plant here but I wouldn't be surprised if they only do it to gain some US gov't. contracts that dictate the contracts get awarded to US based plants. Sure would be nice though if HK came over and made available semiauto versions of the HK UMP or G36 if the AW ban sunset. Especially if it put Spechul Weapons out of the running for the only source of domestically produced HK type firearms.

When I visited SigArms in Exeter NH I got a chance to speak with a few of the higher ups about manufacturing them domestically, and they're just waiting until D-day comes in 2004 and they're going to decide what to do at that point.

:D :D :D :D

Mini-14? What's a Mini-14??? :D

How accurate are these rifles btw? They've got a pretty thin barrel, but do they have good cooling?

How accurate are these rifles btw?

I've talked to a couple guys on the swissrilfes forum who have been issued the Stgw90, and both of them said they were very accurate, at least as good as an M16A1 by the sounds of it.

Going back to the very foundations of the "citizen soldiers", the Swiss are very rifleman-oriented when it comes to defense and tactics, so have no doubt that accuracy was of a premium importance when it was time to decide on the design.

Oh man, if I'll ever have the funds... :banghead: :( :D

It'll be a semi-auto version with a fixed stock but anyway... these rifles are impressing.

From my reading the Sig use a stamped receiver, by the looks of it that's the finest stamped receiver I've ever seen. Better than any milled receiver too.
