Sixth annual Colorado get together

How about Saturday, September 6th at our place?

Suggest some activities, maybe? The clay shooting a couple years ago was fun, and Billll's newest boomers are always the hit of the party. Dove season will be in full swing, and we're overrun with Asian Collared this year (no limit on them, 15 bird limit on mourning doves).

Chili will be on, as usual. We will have fresh salsa, and I can get some fresh sweet corn if there's any interest.

And many thanks to MaterDei for all the thought he put into naming this year's event.

Sep 6th would be a great time. I'd love to blast some birds, and perhaps camp out over in San Isabel again like last year. I also found a big walk-in area south of Pueblo for more doves, for a Friday hunt....

Last year was a great time. Stealth doves...

Plus, salsa.... :-) yummy.

The date is negotiable, but the Saturday before that is before dove season starts.

Thoughts? We're open to suggestions.

Gaiudo
July 28, 2008, 11:57 PM
I don't MIND going before dove season starts, its just a heck of a way to spend the morning and evening. After??

I'm flexible, I'll be hunting doves regardless once the season rolls around.

...I'm in for whatever date...I have the LAV classes 09-20/23...
Is there a safe way to do a rifle shoot? I don't remember any berms across the pasture, but it's a wide open area below the house and barn...mostly 'cause I have yet to see that Garand of yours...I know that'll reach out and touch someone ;)
...anything that works for you and the Missus'...works for me...Tell me when and what you need, I'll get there...probably more than once!

August 18, 2008, 10:34 AM
It looks like I will be coming down for this. I am coming from Longmont so can give a ride to a few people. I have a pickup and could comfortable take 5-6 people... well, 6 uncomfortably and have a pickup bed for gear. Let me know what I can bring. Im really good at making things like Doritos, Chips and other assorted items I can buy at a store. I can try making something edible in the kitchen, but you all might not like being test subjects to my cooking.

Anyway, let me know if you need a ride. We can split the gas, and save a few bucks.

Oh, and Larry, I will need directions again. I know it is go to Pueblo and go east... after that I'm fuzzy.

Larry:

I didn't get a PM with date & directions.

Larry Ashcraft
August 18, 2008, 10:50 PM
OK, directions sent. Anyone else need them?

The date will be Sept. 6th unless there's a big howl of protest.

Sandy's green chili will be lunch. Things to bring would be ice and drinks and any other little incidentals you might think of. If you want to shoot clays, bring some, I'm down to about a two and a half cases.

And welcome to the newcomers!

gyp_c2
August 19, 2008, 12:26 AM
...can I come down on the 31st and stay until the 7th?
I heard the "stealth doves" were already a menace and wish to help you reclaim your lower 40 from them...I can supply bribes if necessary...

Forumite PTK told me about this and it looks like you fellas know how to have a good time. I'd love to make it if I can make my schedule permit.

Okay, here's my question. What is the possiblity that someone can give me a lesson in shooting clays at the Get Together?

:what:

Larry Ashcraft
August 20, 2008, 05:56 PM
Well, you could just watch me and do everything the opposite way. ;)

Actually, Smoke Rizen is a pretty good coach, and I'm almost sure he'll be there. I'm a fair shot, but not much of a teacher.

BruceRDucer
August 22, 2008, 01:49 PM
Hopefully, somebody there will volunteer to give me a lesson in shooting clays. I've a Mossberg 12 guage with 28 inch barrel, but no experience with clays.

Anybody volunteer?

P.S.

Larry, I'll bring lots of drinks and stuff for everybody.

You got enough buckets and tubs for ice & drinks?

And never mind the double posting. I'm so busy these days I can't remember what I've posted, and what I haven't.

Okay then, you swing the gun by the barrel, at home plate, but how do those guys catch it in the outfield. Clays don't make any sense!

gyp_c2

No, let's run with what we have. It'll be good; shooting, dove hunting, new people and green chili. We will provide the chili, tortillas, beans and fixins. We appreciate drinks and ice and whatever else you think might be helpful.

Any later, and we run into what we did the first time, people huddling about in coats. It was fun, but the weather wasn't.

I was hoping Billll or Brassm would chime in, but I got an email that Billll has been injured in a bicycle accident. He's OK, but he can't shoot or travel for a while.

Bill, get well, and we'll see you next year!

Got a new saw last weekend and I'm willin' to cut wood for the winter if you need it. I've been bringin' it home in small amounts from work every week and should have a lot more in the next month or so...When I get a pile together you can come get some hardwood for the stove...
We're gonna' try to camp out that weekend and hunt somewhere on the 1st if we can locate a likely spot...I'd like to find him an 870 or something in 12 gauge at least...I've got almost a case of clays to bring as well...I'm bringin' the poodle-shooter too...Most of the touristas will be movin' out by next weekend and leavin' some more camp space available...http://emoticons4u.com/smoking/rauch06.gif

Larry Ashcraft

Tamren, we'd love to have you. Directions sent.

If anybody is at a loss as to what to bring, we can always use flour tortillas and shredded cheese for the chili.

The doves are flying thick and fast.

gyp_c2
August 31, 2008, 02:26 AM
...Ryan found a 20ga 870 he liked and is almost as excited about it as I am!

PTK
August 31, 2008, 06:52 AM
Hm, I didn't know about the requirement here in CO for a hunter safety class to get a license to hunt even dove - all the places I've lived previously, it's been for bigger game only. Unless I'm missing my understanding of the law, there's no way I can get a license for small game/dove/furbearers without this class.

I don't suppose anyone knows where I might be able to do that between now and next Saturday? Boy am I embarrassed! :o

gyp_c2
August 31, 2008, 11:59 AM
...you wanna' check the Colorado DOW website...I think they have an internet solution for you...don't screw around though, you don't want to miss this! Even if you don't hunt, you can still kill clays!
However, every gun is needed to combat the stealth dove menace ...

Hey Larry and Gyp,

What time does the sun come up there, and what time should we show up for the early dove shoot? I got there rather late last time, don't wanna repeat my tardiness this time.

My wife and I are thinking about camping out the tonight down there, to have easier access to Pueblo. Those mountains to the west of you, Larry, and quite a place.

Nick

edited to add: Oh, and Larry, any problem if we bring the dog down with us? She's a six month old Dane, but don't wanna cause hassles. Just let me know.

Larry Ashcraft
September 5, 2008, 03:09 PM
Sunrise is 6:32. I will be up, and maybe gone for coffee, but show up anytime. Sandy will be up and around by 6:00. I don't know what time Glenn is planning on being here.

The dog should be fine. My Heeler is kind of a crabby old lady, and she may have to establish who's boss, but they'll be fine after that.

Gaiudo
September 5, 2008, 03:33 PM
The pup needs a bit of experience with being shown "who's boss", so that should be fine. I'll probably show up around 6:15 or so and head down to the river. Hope Glenn is there, be good to have his expertise.

See y'all tomorrow

I'll be down around 6 or so...I bought more ammo...and I have to bring the poodle-shooter too...Watch out fer' the dang turkeys dude, that one scared the crap outta' me last weekend...Devil turkeys, stealth doves...what's next?
Oh yeah, about that expertise crap... I figured out I only hit 1 for 8 last weekend...I scared a bunch though!

I don't think I'll be going this time, unfortunately. VERY annoying issues arose at 3am this morning. :(

Larry Ashcraft
September 6, 2008, 08:49 AM
Sorry to hear that. Stuff that happens at 3 am is usually annoying.

We're up, doing some last minute cleaning (been a busy week). I've got to reshape the berm as soon as its light enough to use the tractor. Bud (Smoke Rizen here) came out last weekend and did some mowing and dug a ditch to drain the back yard. Should be dry enough back there that I won't get stuck.

Gaiudo

PTK, plenty of room.

Plenty of NFA toys to share, too. :)

Larry Ashcraft
September 6, 2008, 11:15 AM
My berm is pretty small, so we have to really careful with the centerfire rifles, but we've used them a few times. Just shoot low into the berm.

Several guys want to shoot clays later, so bring your shotgun.

Larry Ashcraft
September 7, 2008, 12:23 AM
We had some fun today!

Started at 6:00 am when three cars pulled in, and just ended a little while ago.

Every get together is different. This one turned out to be the Dove Hunt of the Year. Turns out BruceRDucer didn't need nearly as much instruction on shotgunning as he let on (Mr. and Mrs. Bruce will be feasting on doves tomorrow night). Gaiudo took home a nice bag, but that's to be expected, Nick's a great shot, and a great guy. Lara couldn't make it this year, and we missed her.

And our one-post wonder Cmoon (whose name is Paul, and he's been lurking for years) pounded the doves hard all day. I think he took home a nice bag too, and his son had a memorable day with Tyler.

PTK brought out some great toys. Suppressed P-38, anyone? How about a suppressed Nagant revolver? Suppressed AR15? How about a suppressed 30-06 that sounds like a .22?

Seems PTK doesn't like loud guns. He brought a table full, I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Another one for the record books.

We missed Billll and BrassM and the cannons. Hope everything is OK and hope to see you next summer!

Y'all come back, ya hear?

...That was just the best...
New and old guys and gals, kids, dogs and probably the quietest shooting I've seen in years...
Although we shot no clays, we had outstanding dove hunting all day long! You could literally shoot doves, stop and take a break to shoot handguns and rifles and shoot some more doves...Larry and Sandy put out a fantastic spread and all the guests were great. Larrys' son Jim and fam dropped in, as did Smoke Rizen, Gaiudo w/4-legged friend and all the rest.
My son Ryan made his first Get-Together and had a ball...I did too, there's nothin' like a kids first hunt or an adults' either...Of course a soiree' @ the Ashcrafts' is a bit' more than a hunt or shoot...There's always a real feeling of a family get-together that brings out the best in everyone and this was no exception...Thanks to PTK, we had a great demo/shoot of all kinds of suppressed weapons of every configuration you can imagine...and then some!
He makes a very good case for us to consider suppressing some of our weapons...I'm gonna' look into it for sure...Bud did some great work with his black-powder pistolas and reminded me it's the gunner not the gun, everytime that counts...
We missed our old friends and made some new, altogether I can't think of anyplace I'd rather visit than Larry and Sandys'...They are simply the best...
Thanks to everyone for making us welcome again and we're already makin' plans for next time...http://emoticons4u.com/smoking/rauch06.gif
