A couple of tempting S&Ws

I saw a couple of nice revolvers today at my favorite gun shop and I want to get some opinions on the deals.

The first is a M10-5 priced at $299.99.

The second is a M28-2 5" priced at $329.99.

Both seem to be in excellent condition. I ran "the check" on them and they both passed with flying colors. This was a big help.

If I am correct about the M10, the -5 makes it the same age as me.

Any input or opinions would be helpful, thanks.

Unless the Model 10 is mint, in the original box, with all the papers, that price seems high.

That's a decent price for the Model 28, though. I don't see them around much. Fantastic gun. Closing the cylinder feels like a bank vault being shut. :)

I don't know where you hail from, but in my area the price on the 10 seems a tad high...but it would be your call. The 28 is about right, but are you sure it is a 5"? I don't think the 28 came in a 5". only 4" and 6". The model 27 came in a 5", and if that's a 27 I think the price is good, I'd buy it. In fact, if it's a 27 and you don't want let me know where it is and I might buy it.

5" 28 very unusual....but at least 25 were made that way.
Florida Highway Patrol got 25 Nickel 5 inchers in 1959.

I'd snap up the model 28-2 at that price in half a heart beat.

Thanks for the replies. I'm sure I was wrong about the M28, it must be a 6" bbl. They might be willing to come down on the price, especially if I offer to buy both guns. Either way, your feedback is very helpful.

Even though the M10 may be overpriced, I was very impressed with the gun. It is about as nice as the one in that auction that was linked, but it has a longer barrel (I noticed the reserve has not been met on that sale, BTW). This was the first time I have examined one up close, and it just seems the workmanship really shows through. Somehow, it just feels "right" when you hold it. All the parts have a nice fit, the edges are nicely formed, it's kinda hard to describe (although I'm sure many of you already know). I became somewhat enamored with it, so hopefully they'll come down a bit on the price. I guess I was wrong about its age, too. I had thought the 10-5 was only made in 1962 and the 10-6 was adopted in 1963. But the auction lists the age of that gun to 1967. I have a lot to learn.

I really like the M28 too. I already own a 586-1, and this would be a good compliment. I like the weight of the big N frame, and it is very solid.

Oh, and another question about the M10: How fragile is the ejector rod on these guns? All of my other revolvers have ejector shrouds, and that's the only thing I can't get used to on this gun. Thanks again.

Five years ago, Model 28's were selling at 1/2 to 3/4 the price of a comparable Model 27. As the supply of choice Model 27's has dwindled, Model 28 prices have crept inexorably upward. $300ish seems to be the going tarriff for a cherry Highway Patrolman these days...

Greeting's All-

I think it is wise to try to bargain for both weapons!:D
If they pass the Jim March revolver quick check tip's, I'd
make an offer of $500 for the pair! You might not get 'em
but at least you would be in the ball park. :uhoh:

Best Wishes,

The Model 10 price does seem high, but what the heck...I'm asking the same amount for my 1953 pre-10 on GB!! :D

What Ala Dan says. $500 takes all. :D

I like Ala Dan's style.
His suggestion is great in my book.

Welcome to the club. I am sure that most of us have done the same thing from time to time. This is one of the best reasons to study older guns on a regular basis and have a good idea of what you are looking at. It helps cut down the decision time and keep you from losing such great bargains.
