How to tell if an SKS is pre-'89?

Does anyone know a way to find out if a Norinco SKS was imported into the country prior to the ban? I just got one the other day, and I'm not certain if it has been in the country that long or not. I thought that maybe contacting the importer might be helpful. Does anyone know if they tend to keep records going back that far or not? Would the ATF have a record of weapons importation dates by serial number?
