Remington rifle question...

looked at a NIB Model 700 today at a pawn shop. 223 with one of the cheesy plastic stocks, not the H-S version. Now, I've got several Remmy's and have had several in the past. They want $225 for this one, so I'm ready to jump on it.

I dry fire it just to make sure everything looks good. I notice that the bolt moves around as it fires. Try it again and the same thing. After it's been fired, you can hold the handle with the bolt closed and move it back and forth maybe .050 (guessing). I just know that it seems like a lot of slop. I tried the 2 Model 700's I have at home and they're a lot tighter.

Anybody got experience with this??? I'd think it has to affect accuracy (headspace). Wuz gonna get it for a PD gun, but I'm wondering it it'd hit a barn from the inside???

For that price you could have it rebarreled for less than the cost of a new one.

Crap shoot, really.

Bolt jump caused by firing pin timing is pretty common these days. I've seen new rifles do it that shoot amazingly well.

$225 is a really good price. I'd take it.

It's still a better gun than a NIB Remington 710 at Wally World. :D

the action alone is worth over $225 as a base for a custom.

buy the gun, then send it off to one of the barrel mfgrs and have it rebarrelled... then you'll have a very nice shooting semi-custom for factory mfgr price.

didn't think about the custom barrel idea. Guess I have lots of options. If it shoots OK, leave it as is. If it's greater than minute-of-barndoor, I can re-barrel with a Lilja or Hart and probably have a tackdriver. Like Mike says above, it's a crap shoot, and if it shoots like crap, I can still cure it.

It's got the sporter profile, and I'd obviously rather have the heavy barrel anyway.

Now, about that cheesy stock....is there any place I can get one that's decent for a reasonable (read cheap) price??? Even if I could get a factory take-off (of one of their better stocks), it'd be better than the "made by Mattel" one that it's got now. I'm just not ready to put $1,000 into a semi-custom right now.

I have a friend that's got a full custom BR with a Stolle action, Hart barrel, etc that I could get for $2,200. Can't see putting a lot into a factory rifle that would approach the same cost.

As always, thanks for the great replies

stock option (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/horizontal-item.jhtml?id=0012772210471a&navAction=push&navCount=5&indexId=cat20811&podId=0012772&catalogCode=XD&parentId=cat20811&parentType=index&rid=&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fcatalog%2Fitem-link.jhtml_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20712&hasJS=true)
If you wanted to go the cheap route you could probably find a factory take off stock and barrel(if the gun doesn't shoot).
